How an Elf Became a Squid - Lensography

An Elf Learns How to Become a Squid Lensmaster!

When you join Squidoo, you learn all sorts of new terms. A story you write is called a LENS and you, as the writer, are known as a "LENS-MASTER". I like that term - I am 'Master' of my stories and my site. But, as a 'newbie' you have a lot to learn to Become a Master...

When I first began writing Squidoo lenses, the 'learning curve' was very high... and my beginning was a bit confusing.

For most "internet savvy' people, writing a Squidoo lens is most likely merely an easy extension of their blogging experience or their online writing contributions. For me - never having any 'blog' experience - never having used HTML and graphics, it was somewhat overwhelming!

Join me on my Squidoo Journey on how I became a 'Lensmaster'.... and meet some of the people who helped me along the way.

A Squidoo Friend

She's the reason I've found Squidoo

I moved to Pendleton, South Carolina in January 2009. When the first new friend I made in my new community was introduced to me, her first words (all in one breath) were: "Hi, I'm Nancy, welcome to Pendleton, do you Squidoo?" This new 'friend' turned out to be Nancy Hellams, known throughout the Squidoo community as "OhMe". With OhMe as an inspiration, I joined Squidoo and began creating lenses. Therefore, I'd like to thank her for her help & encouragement while I struggled through my 'baby steps' in this endeavor new to me.

Nancy and her sister, Joan Adams (Joan4 on Squidoo), became my mentors early on. They each create terrific Squidoo lenses which, in my humble opinion, would inspire anyone to 'follow in their footsteps', be brave, and begin their Squidoo journey!

If you don't yet know OhMe and Joan4 -- also known as two of the "Tate Sisters" -- come meet them, below, through their lensographies, Two more charming ladies you'd be hard pressed to find!

My Trials and Tribulations

on becoming a Squidoo Lensmaster

When I first joined Squidoo (Spring 2009) I was such a 'newbie' that I didn't realize I knew NOTHING about making a lens. I think I probably thought a lens was like a blog - which I've also never done! Because of lack of knowledge, and jumping in with both feet without testing the waters first (finding out HOW-TO Squidoo), I made a bunch of mistakes on this lens.

First, I chose Mountainside Crochet as the name for my first lens URL because that was the name I was most known by in the 'online' world and the one I had selected as my 'Account' name. I didn't realize the URL was supposed to refer to the SUBJECT of your lens .... duh! I just thought it would become my account name when I typed it in. In other words, I didn't realize I was actually creating a lens!

Then, I thought an 'About Me" page was about Everything I was passionate about, so I proceeded to tell you about all my "favorite things". Then, I called it a "Lensography" because I thought that was the same as a "Biography". Thus, I ended up with a 'mish-mash' of subjects -- all on one page -- that jumped all over the place with no cohesive 'theme'.

If you were one of the readers of that first lens, and read all the way down the page, you'd have seen I had enough stories that dealt with my 'passions' to become the subjects of 'several' lenses. I am grateful for the many visitors and all the lovely comments this lens generated, and it was because I was promoted by Ohme, who was the only Squidoo lensmaster I knew when I began this journey.

Finally, I became frustrated and confused due to my lack of knowledge (how-to upload pictures, how to credit them, how-to do HTML.... on and on...), so 'gave up' Squidoo-ing for several months. BUT I didn't stop reading lenses, especially "Squidoo Help" and "Squidoo Tips" lenses, plus participating in the forums at SquidU and - at least - learned how-to actually DO this Squidooing, which I should have done at the very beginning!

My New Squidoo Beginning .....

With a New Account Name!

In August 2009 I started all over again! I created a new account with a name I could better relate to and was not so limiting. My (now) Squidoo name is Wednesday_Elf, which is a name given to me by the editors (a married couple) of a small weekly newspaper in South Carolina in the early 1970s. I worked for them on Wednesdays doing layout standing at a layout table, which is like a drafting table (this was bc -- before computers -- :-). Since I'm 'short' I needed to stand on a wooden box to reach the table. Sam & Mim thought this was so funny they nicknamed me their 'little Wednesday Elf'!

Very First Lens -- Redone

Now it's on ONE subject :-)

Taking all I finally learned about 'Squidooing' into consideration, I transferred my very 'first' lens from my now 'defunct' account to my new 'Elf' account.... and completely redid it, turning it into what it was meant to be with the name Mountainside Crochet .... the story of my Etsy Shop by that name!

One story is about my lifelong crafting journey, ending with concentrating on my favorite craft - working with yarn in Crochet. Then there is a review of the field of Fiber Arts and the handmade fiber artists/crafters I admire on Etsy, followed by a story about the crafty Crochet crafters found on Etsy and Elsewhere and one on talented knitters on Etsy!

By the way, did you know there is a National Crochet Week? It's the 2nd week of March each year during National Craft Month! :-)

I'm also a member of Senior Squids and share a page showing the Crafty Grandmas you'll find on Squidoo in the Senior Squids Crafting Directory.

RocketMoms

RocketMoms Session 4

Shortly after establishing my new Squidoo account, I was invited to join RocketMoms for Session 3 and thought this might be the 'boost' I needed. After completing 2 lenses (and learning a little), I realized that because of my 'lack of enough knowledge' I couldn't keep up.

Then I joined Session 4 and GRADUATED!. I am so proud of myself that I was able to complete the course, and the amount of Squidoo knowledge I acquired in those 2 months was like going from 'kindergarten' to Graduate School. Now I know many of the things I did wrong, and what to do about it! Under my new account, I've now completed 23 lenses - quite a jump from my beginnings on Squidoo.

Learn From the Masters When You're a Fresh Squid 'Newbie'!

a_willow is now a 'Mentor'

Michelle Willow aka a_willow began a group on Ning called Fresh Wonders as a way to give back to the Squidoo Community for help she received as a 'Squid Newbie'. She states that Fresh Wonders are here to help newcomers to Squidoo (Fresh Squids) get an easier start.

Since joining this wonderful group of lensmasters, Michelle, and everyone who participates in the Fresh Wonders/Fresh Squids forums, have helped me, and continue to help me, with wonderful advice, critiques of my lenses, and, most importantly, 'encouragement'.

Learning How to 'Find My Niche'

Thanks to my 'Niche-Master', Kim Manley Ort

As part of Fresh Wonders, kimmanleyort has spent countless hours helping new and veteran Squidoo lensmasters learn how to develop their niches.

Thanks to Kim, I was able to go on and develop a series of lenses in my two favorite subjects .... Handmade Crochet and Baseball. Between Kim's help, suggestions, and encouragement, plus suggestions from many other lensmasters on Fresh Wonders, I learned not only what a 'Niche' was, but how to expand it! This training was an invaluable part of my Squidoo journey to date!

Dino the Dinosaur Pillow

My favorite things to crochet are plush animals, particularly for children. I also love creating a series of animals in a single theme. This prompted a series of 'themed' lenses. Below you will find my favorite Sea Creatures, some Barnyard 'Buddies', a number of Nature-Inspired Plushies, and my favorite little 'Roly-Poly' critters!

Crazy About Baseball

Ball Four: Baseball

I've been a baseball fan all my life, and my passion for the game has only grown over the years. Therefore, it's not surprising that I wrote a few lenses about my love for the game, my special baseball memories, and a few more baseball-related stories that appealed to me, especially about my favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Last Fall, after 17 years living in the southern U.S., I returned to "Cardinal Country" in St. Louis. Needless to say, you will probably see MORE baseball and Cardinal-related stories from me in the future!

I love books. I own over 500 books in hardback and paperback, including several complete collections of my favorite authors in the mystery/suspense genre. I also have an abiding love for American Folk Music, particularly The Kingston Trio. These two 'loves brought about my "For the Love of Reading" lens, plus "Three Jolly Coachmen", a story containing a history of The Kingston Trio and my memories of many concerts.

Recently, I wrote my first book review lens, on the SquidLit theme. It's been added to the list below.

I've only touched the 'tip of the iceberg' in the realm of "Holiday" and seasonal Squidoo lenses so far. One about the Autumn Harvest Season, one for Thanksgiving and two for Christmas, mostly about special family memories I wanted to share. The Thanksgiving lens is about decorating themes and shared memories. The Christmas ones include my favorite Christmas Tree Ornaments (Seashore related) and a special Christmas trip we took as 'empty-nesters' facing Christmas alone for the first time.

This was a helpful read. I am still very much a novice but now have 7 lenses. I did three closely related to photography which is a great interest but I don't know if I've found my niche. The quick overview of your journey was helpful. Thank you.
