What Is Lucid Dreaming?

To understand how you can lucid dream you must understand how lucid dreaming works. When the mind is in a dream state it is not conscious. Basically the mind is controlling the dream state using a recipe of random thoughts, experiences, and memories. Once the mind becomes conscious that it is dreaming it is possible to start to control the dreams we have. The problem is that our dreams are so real to our minds most of the time during a dream we are unaware that it is a dream and not reality. This is why we have dreams that we are so sure are real only to awake and find we were just dreaming.

Training Your Mind

The key to being able to lucid dream is being able to recognize that you are dreaming. Once you understand that you are dreaming your mind can become just conscious enough to start to control your dreams. So how does one train their mind to know if one is dreaming? The answer is with reality checks. A reality check is when you check to see if you are awake or dreaming. Remember the old "pinch me I must be dreaming" saying? Well it's kind of like that. There are a lot of reality checks you can do to start to train your mind. I recommend doing a reality check around 4 times a day.

You may be thinking "if I know I'm awake why would I do a reality check?". The idea is you are training your mind to do these tricks through out your waking life and this will transfer into your dream life. By going through the motions of a reality check while we are awake we can begin to put this concept into our dream life routine.

Here are some common reality checks:

  • Looking at your hands - In the dream world your body doesn't look the same as it dose in the waking world. Often your hands will be distorted or of a different color.

  • Jumping - Jumping in the waking world won't have any type of abnormal effect however in the dream world you will actually be able to fly as the minds world has no gravitational pull.

  • Use an electrical device - In the dream world lights and other electrical devices do not have the same effect as in the waking world.

  • Note your place and situation - A lot of times when we dream we are not in places we have ever been. Something odd is usually happening or does not make sense.

By preforming these checks throughout your day you will begin to start a routine in your mind. Once you have masted knowing when you are dreaming lucid dreaming is extremely easy. Keeping a dream journal can also be helpful. You should note things that happen in your dreams frequently. These are what as known as your "dream signs" dream signs can help you determine when you are dreaming.
