Basque is spoken in the Basque country in northern Spain and southwest France by about 650,000 people. Of those approximately 550,000 live in the Basque autonomous region in Spain. The Standard Basque or Batua name for the language is euskara.

The language is classified as an isolate - meaning that it is unrelated to anything else around it. It has a reputation for difficulty, primarily because it is so different from Indo-European languages, but the pronunciation is relatively easy and the grammatical rules can be learned quite quickly so that if you fling yourself with abandon into the delights of everyday Basque you'll realize it's no more difficult than any other language.
