Learning Estonian - getting started with the Estonian language

There's nothing more rewarding than being able to have a conversation with the locals.

Estonian is primarily spoken in Estonia by about 1.1 million people as well as by Estonian migrants in many countries throughout the world.

Along with Finnish, the Estonian language has a reputation for difficulty, but once you fathom out the basic rules of the grammar and fling yourself with abandon into the delights of everyday Estonian you'll realise it's no more difficult than any other language - and in fact can be remarkably simple. And the rewards for speaking Estonian are numerous.

You really only need about 300-400 words and phrases to be able to communicate successfully in almost any situation. So, use this lens to pick up the basic words and phrases in Estonian and use the resources we list to move on and become a true Estonian speaker, or check out Omniglossia's recommendation for learning Estonian here.
