Learn to say it in Portuguese - the essentials for getting by in Portugal and Brasil

There's nothing more rewarding than being able to have a conversation with the locals.

Portuguese is one of the world's major languages spoken across the world by more than 240 million people. It is actually the official language in ten countries, including Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor and Macau.

The language has the reputation for being the "difficult" Romance language (such as Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian), but once you fathom out the pronunciation rules and fling yourself with abandon into the delights of everyday Portuguese you'll realise it's no more difficult than any other language. And the rewards for speaking Portuguese are numerous.

There are difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese, but no more so than say between British English and American English.

You really only need about 300-400 words and phrases to be able to communicate successfully in almost any situation. So, use this lens to pick up the basic words and phrases in Portuguese and use the resources we list to move on and become a true Portuguese speaker, or check out the recommendations on Omniglossia here.
