How do Solar Panels Work
Learn about how solar panels work
How do solar panels work? Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic systems (PV), work by converting sunlight in to electric energy. I'm sure you already knew that so let's take it a step deeper. Each PV panel is made up of a group of solar cells made of a semi conductive material, like crystalline silicon ( I'm sure you knew that too ). This absorbs lights energy very efficiently. The panels are build in layers also for efficiency. Majority of panels you have ever seen have a clear protective layer on top, a few conductive cell layers, and on the bottom a layer of polymer backing.
To make these panels even more effective the top layer is treated to be electrically negative and the bottom to be electrically positive. This then causes electrons in the silicon cells to be tapped loose by the sun and travel from the bottom to the top layer. When they pass through electrical contact in the top layer a full circuit is created and power is made. It is then routed to wherever you have designated for power.
So how effective are these solar panels? Solar panels work greatest under perfect conditions to power a typical home. Solar panels are place on the side of your home which receives the most sunlight for the most consistent amount of time. 6 hours of exposure is the minimum you would want to have. But for the actual transfer of energy, solar panels are greatly effective and can really save you a lot of money.
Did you know you could even make money off of the extra power you create from you solar panels?
Are you curious about building your own solar panel? It is very simple and fun. Not only that but a lot less expensive than you may be thinking. Check it out.
