Sink-Cleaning Tutorial for the Housekeeping Impaired

Dear Reader, do you cringe each time you walk by your kitchen sink? Is your bathroom sink so scummy that you are afraid to brush your teeth?

Fear no more, because this lens explores all of the various and sundry ways that you can take your sinks from dank to swank (and if you have the sneaking suspicion that this lens was written by someone who would rather read about how to clean her sink than actually roll up her sleeves and put in a little elbow grease--you would be right).

However, I have finally come to agree with FlyLady that no other housecleaning task packs more bang for your buck than a sparkling clean sink. Read on for all of the "dirt" on how to clean your sink!

Basic Rules for Cleaning the Sink

These simple rules will help you get your sink clean and shiny.

1. Remove all dishes, trash, food, and debris from the sink. Make sure to run the disposal with lots of hot soapy water if you are cleaning your kitchen sink.

2. Stop up the drain using whatever method you use to catch water in your sink. Fill the sink with warm, sudsy water (regular dishwashing detergent works great). Using a dish scrubber, brillo pad, or steel wool, scrub the sides of the sink while leaving the warm water in the sink. Make sure you also scrub the sink faucet, nooks and crannies around the edge of the sink bowl, and any area between the back of the sink and the wall.

3. I like to add Clorox bleach to the warm sudsy water AFTER I finish scrubbing the sides of the sink (otherwise the Clorox will hurt your hands and bleach your clothes). On a side note, it is always a good idea to wear rubber gloves while doing intensive sink cleaning! Let the Clorox sit for as long as possible, preferably at least one hour and up to eight hours for quite dirty sinks.

4. Drain the water from the sinks and rinse completely.

5. Polish the faucet and rim of the sink until dry and shiny.

5. For an extra shiny sink, you can try putting a thin layer of car wax on your clean sink. Make sure your sink is dry before you apply the wax.

6. Voila! A beautiful, clean, shiny sink! Great job!

I use rubbing alcohol on my bathroom sinks, which keeps them shiny clean and disinfected.
For the kitchen sink I keep vinegar and baking soda on hand for deodorizing drains, and use a spray bottle of vinegar and water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. I use the spray bottle for all kitchen cleaning -- sink, counter tops, stove. Works great.
    Loved your cheery, colorful lens.
