With A Bit Of Effort...

How do you get rid of kidney stones... is a fairly common question asked by many kidney stone sufferers. Kidney stones (if small enough) usually pass through the urinary system of their own accord. They can provide slight discomfort or extreme unrelenting pain pending on the size or shape of the stone while passing through the ureter. Some natural remedies and certain pain-killing medications can help smaller stones pass through the system a lot easier.

If a stone is too large and cannot pass through the ureter by itself, usually medical intervention is required. This can be expensive and usually requires a full surgical procedure.

Down below are some proven ways of getting rid of kidney stones... both large and small!

How Do You Get Rid Of Small Kidney Stones?

Natural Remedies

Smaller kidney stones often cause more discomfort and pain then larger stones due to their ability to get stuck in the ureter while trying to pass through the urinary system.

Here are some effective ways to get rid of smaller stones that do get stuck within the ureter:

Natural Cures - some natural remedies are able to break down smaller stones into smaller granules hence allowing the stone to move through the system with less pressure and more ease.

Some proven remedies include celery seed tea, phosphoric acid drinks, jump and bump technique, lemon and olive-oil cure, lemon and warm water drink. It is also important to remember to drink plenty of water to help try and flush the stone through.

How Do You Get Rid Of Large Kidney Stones?

Medical Intervention

Larger kidney stones are often too big to pass through into the ureter so sit dormant within the kidney itself. Even though these larger stones don't usually cause significant discomfort as the smaller ones do it is important that they are removed so that they don't cause significant trauma and scarring of the kidney itself which could lead to infection and possible death.

These larger stones usually require medical/surgical intervention. Types of procedures include:

Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL): Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) is the most frequently used procedure for the treatment of kidney stones. In ESWL, shock waves that are created outside the body travel through the skin and body tissues until they hit the kidney stones. After the stones have been hit, they will break down into sand-like particles that can easily pass through the urinary tract.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (tunnel surgery): Tunnel surgery is used for large kidney stones or for kidney stones that are in a location that does not allow ESWL. In most cases, patients will need to stay in the hospital for several days after tunnel surgery.

Ureteroscopy: Although some kidney stones located in the ureters can be treated with ESWL and natural cures, in some cases (if the stone is stuck for a significant period of time) an ureteroscopy may be needed to prevent kidney infection. In an ureteroscopy, the surgeon will pass a small fiber-optic instrument called a ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. The surgeon will then locate the stone and either remove it with a cage-like device or shatter it with a special instrument that produces a form of shock wave. A small tube or stent may be left in the ureter for a few days to help the lining of the ureter heal.

Prevention

Ultimately, the best way to get rid of kidney stones once and for all is to stop making them. Prevention is the key. The first thing you need to do is to find out what type of stone you make. Certain kidney stones require specific supplements and medication to eliminate them from forming again, while most kidney stones will require you to watch what you eat, drink lots and lots of water to keep your body flushed and to lead a healthier lifestyle (lose weight, drink less alcohol etc.)
