You don't need to spend a lot of money, you just need something simple that you can record yourself on and then play it back. If you have an iPhone, or other smartphone, you can use the voice memo or voice recorder feature on your phone for a quick recording.

Now sing a song into your recorder. Play it back to yourself and listen to see if you would enjoy that person singing if it wasn't you. Listen for things that don't sound right and ask yourself what it is that may be causing it. Are you squeezing? Are you singing too light and breathy? Are you singing very monotone and quietly?

People always say to sing to your family and friends, but then you have to wonder if they are just being nice or if they really are serious when they say you can sing good. So another way to go could be to record yourself and post it on online forums and message boards, or YouTube of course, and ask for the opinions of others.
