How to develop an ear for what sounds good

Before and Afters

How do you know if you can sing good? The best way to develop an ear for what sounds good and what doesn't is to listen to before and after's of other singers. This works because you are judging someone else's voice so it is easier than trying to judge your own voice. When you listen to before and afters you can get a good idea of why the singer didn't sound good before, and then you can hear why the singer sounds better after. This will develop your sense of what sounds good and what doesn't, and therefore you will have a better ear and be able to tell if your own voice is good or not (as well as what is wrong with it and what you need to fix to make it sound better).

Where can I listen to other singers' "Before and Afters?"

Go to the Before and Afters page and there should be a section with several audio clips of before and afters from people just like you.

Another way is to watch a ton of YouTube videos of people singing so you can get a good idea of who is good and who isn't, as well as why they are good or bad. All of this will help you develop an ear for singing talent.

Ready To Judge Your Singing Voice?

Grab a recorder!

How do I know if I can sing? Now that you are ready to judge your own voice you will need to get yourself an inexpensive voice recorder. You don't need to spend a lot of money, you just need something simple that you can record yourself on and then play it back. If you have an iPhone, or other smartphone, you can use the voice memo or voice recorder feature on your phone for a quick recording.

Now sing a song into your recorder. Play it back to yourself and listen to see if you would enjoy that person singing if it wasn't you. Listen for things that don't sound right and ask yourself what it is that may be causing it. Are you squeezing? Are you singing too light and breathy? Are you singing very monotone and quietly?

All of these are things to think about when trying to figure out if you can sing good. Watch the video below for more specific details about this concept.

Recording yourself sing

is a very good way to diagnose your voice since it is much easier to hear yourself the same way others hear you.

Phone Lessons - How to know if you can sing goodYou can get the professional feedback from a famous vocal coach no matter who you are or where you live. How do you do this? Brett Manning and his professionally certified vocal coaches in his Nashville studio give phone lessons (and internet/webcam/Skype) to aspiring singers every day, and all over the world. If you are willing to take just one vocal lesson, then you can call them on the phone and they will diagnose any incorrect vocal technique you are singing with and provide you with vocal exercises that will fix all of your problems so that you can sing with freedom and have a natural sounding vocal tone quality that will turn you into a good singer. You don't even have to continue taking the voice lessons, you just call them one time and they tell you what you need to work on and give you voice exercises to fix those problems. From there, you can practice with those singing exercises in the comfort of your own home whenever you want.

Other ways to know if you can sing good:

Other ways to know if you can sing goodBesides trying to determine your own singing talent, you can always ask for the opinion of others. People always say to sing to your family and friends, but then you have to wonder if they are just being nice or if they really are serious when they say you can sing good. So another way to go could be to record yourself and post it on online forums and message boards, or YouTube of course, and ask for the opinions of others. But then you must be warned that you never know who the person is that is commenting on your voice; it may be someone who doesn't care and is just having a bad day, or it may be someone whose opinion does not come from an reliable source. Posting your singing voice online should just be to get a general response, don't take it to heart!
