I've always wondered about the correct spelling of Chanukah! All I can say is Happy Hannukah. This lens is blessed.

Last year I asked a linguistic from the Hebrew University what is the right why to spell the holiday name. He said this:
In Latin: Hanukka (two k because the kaf has a dot in it)
In English: Chanookkah (And he himself admitted that NOBODY spells it that way for some reason. But vav is 'oo'.)

Just thought you'd like to know that this lens is featured in my new lens Ten Great Jewish Holiday Lenses (http://www.squidoo.com/ten-great-jewish-holiday-lenses). :-)

I join you in preferring the unpopular Hanukah. But I learned my lesson. For the gifts lens I used the top 3 spellings... I laughed out loud at the quotes ("they tried to kill us, let's eat") and thought your explanation of the possible reasons for the spelling confusion masterful. Blessed. Chappily.

As a Christian who was a foster child with a Jewish family through my late teens, a family who really didn't celebrate anything, and with a brother who married (and later divoced) a Jewish woman, I have always been a bit confused about the Jewish religion and in particular the differences between Hanukkah (spelling et ál), and Christmas. In a quick search for the starting date of Hanukkah, I saw and read your lens of spelling and found it to be a great source of perspective and information (and some light humor). In particular, your comment about most Jewish holidays, "They tried to kill us, we survived, let's eat." was a powerful statement to me and helps me to better respect and honor those who suffered (and still suffer) through the persecution of their faith and culture. Thanks for helping to clear up some 30+/- years of curiosity and confusion.

I ALWAYS have to double check my spelling on this one! You must have been reading my mind when you wrote this. :)

Well, no wonder I couldn't read the Hebrew, I was going from left to right! It is the prettiest version. Finally a word that's hard to misspell! Chinese sounds wonderful for December 25th! I love your added humor!

I like the idea of just typing or writing it Khnukh.

Spelling can definitely be a dilemma. I find it especially so between U.S. and Canada. Canadians love to add "u"s it seems. LOL

Love this lens! The spelling dilemma is especially an issue when you're trying to do a Google search on anything Chanukah-related. You feel compelled to do the search at least 2 or 3 times with different spellings. Personally, I'm a fan of the initial "C".

I am always really confused about the proper spelling, great to know the rest of the world is and there is not really a right way to spell "Hanukkah" in English haha! That's my spelling, and I always have to spell check it, because its never a world I can get right.

Great Job! I love this lens. Favorite line was about hanukkah's theme being the same as all Jewish holidays. So true and so funny, yet I never looked at it that way before. I have featured it at:

Another great 5* lens! I collect all the Disney Chanukah pins - http://eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/search/results?keywords=chanukkah and over the years they have used several different spellings which makes our display quite funny to look at!

Wonderful information about Hanukkah and it's spelling. Blessed by an Angle today!

I beg to differ on Christmas being only one day. There are twelve days of Christmas, which is why my mum always keeps the tree up until January 6. Something that many Christians fail to know or ignore. Of curse if you listen to Scrooge he keeps Christmas in his heart all year long.

Very informative lens. So much more is taught about Hanukkah in schools nowadays I can remember when the word was never mentioned. Thanks for the lens.
