Happiness Is It Over Rated?

how happy are you right now? is the world happy or sad?
Is our happiness affected by the news of disaster and misfortune that occurs around the world. Before the media revolution people never really had the wall to wall instantaneous coverage of news stories from all over the planet. I wonder if we are designed as human beings to emotionally cope all of this information?
According to psychologists we use 'rules of thumb' or heuristics to help us manage all the information in the world. One of these is called the 'judgmental heuristic'. It works like this; the more you see something bad the more you believe it is likely to happen to you. So the moment a disaster around the other side of the planet happens and you see it on the news the more skewed your judgement becomes about bad stuff in the world.
There is a conspiracy theory about this which runs; make sure people feel anxious and insecure in the world, this will make them feel down. In order to relieve these bad feelings they will go shopping because it will give them a buzz and make them feel happy for a while. Its only temporary though and so we have to keep the bad news coming so they keep spending.
There is of course a solution to this. Reduce time spent watching TV news and devote more time to simple local interests and pleasures. Some might say this is putting your head in the sand. I would say that we have an emotional reservoir that we all need to call on at times in our lives. Life throws challenges at us. If we use up our reservoir worrying about things we can't influence and that don't directly influence use then surely we have less available when we really need it.
Being happy can come from the simplest of things. A family visit, a walk in the country, a nice swim, learning to play an instrument. So how happy do you feel right now!
