How I'm Going to Write a Short Story Every Week
Ranked #6,806 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #245,055 overall
Goal: Writing a Short Story Every Week
I want to write. I want to write and feel like I am actually accomplishing something. I have numerous novels started, but I kind of get discouraged because they don't feel like they are close to being finished. This sparked the idea of writing a short story every week.
Why do I want to write a short story every week? I want something I can send out to publishers on a regular basis. If I can't get them published somewhere, I can always publish them myself in either am anthology or on the digital markets. There are a lot of authors out there who are making decent money publishing their work on Amazon and Smashwords. This is kind of a dream of mine.
What is the point of this lens? I want to keep track of my progress. I want you, the reader, to see how well (or how bad) I am doing. I think if you can tell me every so often that I am doing a great job, then maybe I will keep writing those stories. You might also want to know how I am going about writing and submitting my Short Stories.

January 30, 2011 - Thinking about writing a Comic Book Script this week. I am not sure what I am going to write about just yet
September 1, 2011 - I have really Dropped the Ball on this one. I will have to back up and figure out what I want to do. Short Stories or Novels.
July 19, 2011 - I have been struggling to get through the first draft of this first novella. I am at the point that I get in all my stories. I run into some sort of lag in the middle and I kind of lose interest. Now I need to find a way to push through it so I can finish the story. I am at about 8,000 words. I expect the story to be about 18,000 to 20,000 words.
July 5, 2011 - I sat down and wrote for about 2 hours today. I got more than 2200 words on paper on the first Novella of the new series I decided to write. I felt really good about my progress. I need about another 8 days like this one, then I will have the first draft of the first novella completed.
July 2, 2011 - Hey You guys haven't reminded me that I should be writing my short story every week. OK, I guess I can't expect you to come back on a regular basis just to see if I wrote something new. So I have been outlining a series of Novellas I want to write. I am having fun trying to come up with clever ways to bring the books together with overarching story arcs. My goal is to start writing one of these novellas every month. They are a bit larger than the short stories that I wanted to do, but I think I can keep myself motovated by making crazy things happen to these three people.
June 16, 2011 - I wrote a 100 Word Drabble today to take care of the short story for this week. I know it is a cop out, but It was something I was able to submit to the Drabblecast this afternoon. I am excited. I have not submitted anything in a while.
June 14, 2011 - Yesterday I only got about 300 words written. Today has been even worse. I haven't even sat down to write at all. Grant it, I am not feeling that well today, but I would still like to sit down and get something written. Right now I am going to make dinner, then I will sit and do a little writing, even if it is only a few hundred words.
June 11, 2011 - I have no motivation to write today. I want to, but I can't stay focused on the work. I have written about 400 words... maybe. I think I am going to spend some time reading. Maybe that will inspire me to write.
June 10, 2011 - I am about 1,000 words into the current story. I think it is going to be about 5-7,000 words. My brainstorming the other day has given me enough ideas for 5 or six short stories. I am looking forward to writing them.

Brainstorming Ideas
Coming up with something to write about.
The first thing I want to do is to start brainstorming ideas. If I don't have an idea to write about, then I will not be able to create something that anyone would want to read. There are several different ways to brainstorm. Below are a few of those ways. Personally I like to use the the Mind Map technique. It seems to be the best way for me to flush out ideas.

- Oh, I am far better at writing about factual events. I have a hard time being as creative as folks like you. Hope you'll give yourself a break from such stringent goals. I admire your ambition. Take good care, Rose

- Yes, self-publishing is huge now--a viable alternative from what I can tell. Don't let anything stop you from achieving your dream. Much success with it. :)

- I haven't actually written any, unless you count the one I wrote in 6th grade. It did get first place in the short story contest in my class. I've read a lot of them, though.
