How to Make Ribbon Hair Bows for Little Girls
I have two daughters, so I really wanted to learn how to make hair bows out of ribbon, especially the boutique style bows. Girls hair bows are adorable and popular, but also expensive, so why not start making ribbon hair bows like I did? Once you learn how to make hair bows for little girls, you can make them for your daughters, give as gifts, or even make them to sell.

You can start making a basic loop ribbon hair bow today. You will need a good, heavy ribbon, alligator clip, and needle and thread.
Here are the steps to making a basic hair bow.
- Get your ribbon and make a loop. This first loop is your bottom loop and your largest loop, so should be the size that you want your bow to be. If you want your bow to have tails, then be sure to leave one tail here.
- At the base of your loop, hold the ribbon tight and twist once.
- Make another loop and twist again.
- Keep making loops and twisting until your bow is as full as you want (most bows have 3 to 4 loops on each side). You can also experiment with making the loops smaller as you come towards the middle (like the hair bow pictured above) or making them all about the same size.
- With your needle and thread, stitch the center of the bow to hold it tight. You can make a decorative knot and stitch it to the center too. Now hand sew the bow to your alligator clip.

Step by step how to make ribbon hair bows.
I knew how to make a basic hair bow, the kind that are full and have three loops on each side, because I worked at a florist for my mom as a teenager. At the florist we had to make big, full bows for flower arrangements, wedding decorations, and funeral arrangements. When I first had my baby girl I thought I'd be able to make all of her hair bows. It wasn't until I became a mom that I really started to pay attention to how other moms were dressing their little girls. Sure, the basic bows were ok, but most moms were decking their daughters out with these big beautiful fancy hair bows. They are way too pricey for me to purchase boutique hair bows for my two daughters to match their outfits. So, I decided to learn how to make hair bows for little girls. If I could make ribbon hair bows, I would never have the expense of buying those gorgeous hair bows I so wanted for my baby girl.
I didn't find any books that were really helpful. None of the books seem to show hair bow instructions for the new bows that were popular for girls now. I cam across a few YouTube videos with instructions, but didn't learn how to make all of the different style of hair bows that I was hoping to.
That's when I came across this Secrets to Bow Making Success program. I was skeptical at first, but they do offer one free lesson. So, I filled out the form for the free lesson (only requires your name and email because they email you the lesson). My free bow making lesson was emailed to me shortly after completing the form and I was very impressed with it.

After I watched the free how to make ribbon hair bows lesson, I decided to buy their Secrets to Bow Making Success Course. The free course taught me how to make a basic, full looped bow like I learned when working at the florist, but I could tell by the quality of instruction that the full how to make hair bows for little girls DVD course would teach me how to make the boutique quality hair bows that I wanted for my two girls.
I really enjoyed this bow making course. I learn better how to do crafts by watching videos than reading instructions and looking at still images. The directions are easy to follow and very clear. You will learn exactly what materials you need (this is so important because there are many different types of ribbon and hair clips) and how to efficiently use all your materials.
I started out buying this hair bow instruction course just so I could make hair bows for my girls, but all the moms at my oldest daughter's school love my hair bows so much that I'm working on starting a home business and selling bows locally and I may even decide to expand and start selling my handmade hair bows on Etsy. I also make hair bows to give as gifts.
This easy to understand DVD course teaches you how to make butterfly bows, pinwheel bows, korker bows, lined clips, trendy clip, flower bow, loopy, and more. This tutorial also teaches you how to make braided headbands and gorgeous bow holders (which make great gifts and sell well).

- I don't currently have a little girl to make hair bows for, which is a pity but of course it's still a good skill to have. I can see it would be a lovely way to make gift wrapping special in any case.
