How Much Does It Cost To Make...

What Does That Cost?

I was talking with friends in Skype about how much a cord of wood costs, because we have a project in Engineering class where we make a chess set. Part of the project is to determine what material the chess pieces will be made out of, and our group decided on wood, so we were trying to find the price of wood to price our set accordingly. This led me to search and find out the cost to manufacture a few other common things. Below are some of the things I found.

Apple iPhone 4S-16GB

According to PCMag.com , it costs $196 to make a iPhone 4S. I thought this was a very high cost, considering the cost is barely under double the price of the item. I would have guessed that an iPhone would have costed $80 to manufacture.

Apple iPad 2

According to Business Insider , an iPad 2 costs $325 to manufacture. Considering the $500 price tag, Apple is barely breaking even, they are making even less than on the iPhone. The difference between the iPad and iPhone, though is that everybody who gets an iPhone pays $100 per month for service, some of which goes to Apple, but on the iPad, not everybody gets wireless service.

Apple MacBook Air

According to ComputerWorld.com , it costs Apple $718 to make a MacBook Air, but it sells for $1000. This is another Apple product that has a very small profit margin, compared to the price of the item being sold.

In Conclusion...

Even though Apple products may seem over-priced or very expensive, Apple doesn't actually make that much money for the amount of money they put in.

Products that almost made it: tables, chairs, windows, iPods, chainsaws, desks, computer mice, Xbox's, PS3's, and video games. Want to see any of these or others? Leave a comment!

I would be interested to know where they get them made. I believe in fair trade so it would be relevant to know

Of course the old adage with respect to statistics can also apply to accounting, Only the manufacturer really knows their true costs. Thanks!

Very interesting idea for a lens - I don't have anything in particular in mind to ask about, but I'll pop back in if I think of anything!
