How Often Should Tomato Plants Be Watered?

If your asking the question "How often should tomato plants be watered?" more then likely your watering too little or too much. Tomato plants can be finicky in their watering. Problems can easily occur if the soil does not contain the right moisture level.

It is imposable to tell you the exact amount of water each plant needs. Not only am I unsure of the size of your particular plants but also you must take soil type into consideration. Some soils are just naturally dry and require more watering. When watering tomato plants I like to use the "one hour rule". Water your plants with a decent amount of water but don't flood them. Come back an hour latter. If the soil is dry you need to be watering more. If the soil is too wet or your plants are swimming water less.

Dry dirt will kill plants easily as they are some what sensitive to temperature and in the hot summer months in which tomato plants grow soil can be a way of temperature control. If you can't seem to keep your soil moist it might be time to bring in some fertilizers. I recommend dry manure soaked in water for 24 hours. Water your plants with a manure mixture to help retain water.

    This lens was very informative. I have several types of tomatoes, both in my square foot garden and in containers. I am learning a lot about them, this is my first year planting a garden.

    My tomato season has been terrible this year with heat waves and frost in the same weeks. I was checking out your lens while looking for lenses for my discovery tool on my lens on my tomatoes which were hit by an early frost.
