A BUBBLE GUM IS BORN! - Squid Angels blessed this lens

If your browser is Google Chrome, you will hear some Music. Your eyes are not fooling you. You have to read behind the bubble gum curtain. Follow the instructions.

CAUTION: Spoiler warning. Use your mouse, left click and drag over the block of pink to reveal the spoiler. (Don't forget to see the photo at the bottom of this Lens.)

Chicle is a milky sap which is gathered from the bark of a South American tree called Sapodilla Tree or Sapote Tree. Its scientific name is Manilkara zapota.

In 1900's, Frank Fleer, the owner of Fleer Company was experimenting time and time again how to create a bubble gum which was not messy to eat, not chewy and not sticky. Fleer made some gums which exploded on the faces and messed up the clothes. He was buying the gum base from another company.

On 08 January 1905, Walter E. Diemer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he was young, he worked for Fleer Company as Cost Accountant.

Gilbert Mustin, the Boss of the company, was thinking of cutting costs to save money. The employees were worried that they lose their jobs . Walter's office was located at the 3rd Floor which was close to the make-shift lab where the ingredients, gum base for bubble gum were stored and experimented. Time and again, Gilbert Mustin, would summon him to watch over the gum base mixture while he was running down to the 1st Floor to take a call or make a call since there was only one telephone apparatus in their company. Walter was not just an accountant but he was also an avid fan of the chewing gum so he also started experimenting. It was in his interest to have this experiment to be successful.

Gilbert Mustin got tired of everything, he failed to find the right recipe so he quit mixing the gum base. On the other hand, Walter was enjoying the experiment, never tiring to use trial and error until one day, he almost succeeded making the perfect bubble gum. He used a small amount of Chicle (latex from the Sapodilla Tree) but forgot to add the flavoring. The outcome was soft and made bubbles but the next day, the gums were hard.

He tried again and finally, on 29 June 1928, he mixed the gum batch well and put the last food coloring he could find in the lab. It was Pink but what the heck, he used it and Voila! He made the perfect Bubble Gum, soft and the bubbles did not make a mess. From that time on, the Bubble Gum color remained Pink. Because he ran out of food coloring, he had no choice but to use Pink. The secret was that he put a small amount of Chicle to the mass and a little bit of food coloring. That was accidental. That day, the bubble gum was born. He made a trial sale at a store and it sold like hot cakes. Mustin named Walter's invention DUBBLE BUBBLE. The gum mass was cut into pieces and wrapped with a machine used to wrap salt water taffy.

He never got any payout for his invention. He never applied for any patent. The company offered him to be the Vice-President. He was just happy to discover something and share it to the people especially kids. He died on 09 January 1998 at the age of 93 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The ingredients of the Bubble gum are:

Chicle (Chewing gum base which is obtained from the Sapodilla Tree), Sugar, Corn Syrup
For Sugar-free chewing gum: sweeteners and sugar substitutes are used
Various aroma flavors and additives which make the chewing gum soft and smooth are also used.

SMILE, YOU'RE IN CANDID CAMERA!

BUBBLE GUM BLOWING CHAMPION

Bubble gums and chewing gums are good for your teeth. They act like dental floss. Bubble blowing is sometimes not good for your teeth if you do it quite often because it can make the front teeth protrude. After eating sweet candies, kids should brush their teeth and adults should also do. Otherwise, you end up like Mr. Nice Guy. Photo courtesy of my Turkish girlfriend.
