Google's Blogger has a new tip jar widget

Recently, Google released a virtual tip jar widget that can easily be installed onto a Blogger site. It allows readers to leave a financial compliment for the writer or writers of the site. It also allows for the blogger to receive compensation for the work he or she does to keep the blog going. It can be used along with site ads or it can stand alone. The only requirement is that the blog writer open a Google Checkout account.

Instructions on adding a tip jar

1. To use this widget you must have a Google Checkout seller's account. If you already have this set up, you can skip this step.

- Go to Google Checkout for Sellers
- After you fill out the important data, make sure to go to the "settings" tab and click "integration" on the left hand list. Put a check mark in the box next to "My company will only post digitally signed carts". This is a Google requirement. The widget will not work otherwise.
- Copy the Merchant ID number. You will need this later when you are working in Blogger.

2. Now it is time to make changes to your Blogger blog

- Go to the Dashboard and select "Design"
- Click "Add a gadget"
- Search "Support My Blog" and click the "+" sign
- Fill in the form. There are defaults but I urge you to really consider the $5 amount. This might seem a bit high to many readers, so start with $1. You can always go back and change it after you look at traffic patterns.
- You will need to enter your Merchant ID number that you saved from step 1.
- Make sure you save.

Google will process the tip as soon as it is received. It may take several days to appear in your checking account electronically. You can set up an email notification every time you receive a tip, so you will be aware to expect a payment.
