How To Add A Custom 'Contact Me' Button To Your Squidoo Lens

Like The Idea Of Having 'Contact Me' Buttons On Your Lenses?
Some Lensmasters don't even have "Contact Me" enabled on their Lensmaster Page, but for most who do, that's enough.
Some want more.
If you want to encourage email feedback from your readers on one, or all of your Lenses without having them go to your profile to find the link, it's actually very easy.
Making The 'Contact Me' Link
The link is actually very easy. If you look at the URL for the "Contact Me" link on your Lensmaster Page, it looks something like:
http://www.squidoo.com/utility/contact_lensmaster/how-to-add-a-custom-contact-me-button-to-your-squidoo-lens
Instead of "how-to-add-a-custom-contact-me-button-to-your-squidoo-lens" yours will have the last part of the URL for your top-ranked page.
In the past, my top-ranked Lens has been:
http://www.squidoo.com/hydrogen-peroxide-mouthwash
When it was, this was my "Contact Me" link:
http://www.squidoo.com/utility/contact_lensmaster/hydrogen-peroxide-mouthwash
Just by switching the last part of your "Contact Me" URL to whichever Lens you place the link on will automatically put the title of that Lens in the "Your Subject" line of the message.
Besides encouraging more email feedback, this will help you identify which Lenses the email messages are coming from!
You might not see your own "Contact Me" link while logged in, so feel free to copy this part from right here:

Select An Image To Be Your 'Contact Me' Button

If you know how to make your own button, great!
If not, the quickest thing to do if you don't already know where to find free pre-made button images, is to go to Squidoo: Buttons & Banners, and pick the one you like. The page is set up to make badges and banners with the URL of one of your Lenses embedded in it.
If you scroll to the bottom, you'll see that the Squidoo Team has generously left us a nice selection of Squidoo images for us to customize!
Add The 'Contact Me' Text to Your Button

If you already know how to add text to images, great! If not, here's how to do it with The GIMP. The GIMP is a free tool for manipulating images, and if you don't already have a program for working with images like this, it won't cost you anything to get it and use it for this.
When you load your selected image into The GIMP, you have three floating windows (you can see that I still have my browser open to the Buttons & Banners page in the background).
The left is your toolbox, center is the image you are working on, and the right window has your work history. The right window actually has more than just the work history, but I'm not going to cover much there, except to say that if you make a mistake, you can use it to easily go back to a previous step and try again.
Select The Text Selection Tool
Squidoo recommends Trebuchet font for the Buttons and Badges. You can find it in GIMP.
In the Toolbox, click on the "A"
Select The Font & Color For Your Button
The bottom area should now show all of the text options. The font should be set to Sans. Click on the "Aa" box and a drop down menu should open.
Scroll down, and click on Trebuchet MS font. Then select your color, if you want something other than black. I'm using blue to match the text on some of the pre-made buttons and banners
Add A Text Layer
Clicking on your button image in the middle window will add the text layer. At first it looks like a single square box. When you move the cursor away, it will look like a group of four boxes.
At the same time, a fourth window will open on the lower right. This is your text editor, and since I'm working on a small picture, I move the floating text editor window closer to the work area.
Resize The Text To Fit Your Button

When you start typing in the text editor window, you see it show up in the text layer in your image. If the text is the wrong size, go back to the test options in the Tool Box window, and use increase or decrease button to readjust the text size.
Mine started at eighteen, which was too big. Reducing it to eleven looks good to me for this button.
Back at the image, the cursor automatically switches to the Move Tool allowing you to reposition the text layer.
Save your new Contact Me Button, you're done!
Add The 'Contact Me' Button To Your Lens
Your code for the button should look like this:
<a href="http://www.squidoo.com/utility/YourSquidooLens"><img src="http://www.YourSite.com/microbutton-contact-me.gif" /></a>
You'll need to host your file on your own site, or a free image hosting site.
Squidoo Guide: Linking Tips
I probably originally saw the instructions for making the link on this Lens by thefluffanutta, but didn't see a need to do it at the time. When I had the idea to make the button, I knew I had seen it somewhere, and tracked it down again. Check it out for even more neat links you can add to these buttons!
