How to Appeal to FEMA
Ranked #11,166 in Culture & Society, #246,940 overall
FEMA has denied my claim. Now what?
After a natural disaster strikes many people turn to FEMA to help them in their recovery. They request help with finding shelter, repairing their property, or meeting other needs while they try to get back on their feet. Unfortunately, many people have their initial claims denied. When this is the case, individuals can appeal FEMA's decision. In many instances it takes two or three attempts, but many people who had their first claim rejected will eventually receive some type of assistance if they are able to Cut the Red Tape and navigate the appeals process.
Reasons Why Claims are Denied.
There are many possible reasons for FEMA to reject a claim. Here are some of the most common ones.
1. The most common reasons for denial are insurance related. FEMA cannot provide assistance for items covered by insurance; Therefore, FEMA must wait for all insurance claims to be processed before providing assistance and must receive proper documentation from the insurance company.
2. Another common reason for denial is failure of the applicant to provide sufficient proof of occupancy or ownership.
3.Claims will be denied if the property is not the applicant's primary residence.
4. FEMA may have failed to verify the applicant's identity.
5. FEMA may also decide that the damage is not sufficient to require assistance.

Starting the Appeals Process
Before you begin the appeals process read your denial letter very carefully.
Just because an initial claim was rejected does not mean it is impossible to receive help. Claims denied for insurance reasons may be accepted if the insurance company provides FEMA with proof of denial or an insurance settlement does not sufficiently cover the losses. Problems with identity or occupancy verification can often be fixed with further documentation. Don't waste more time and take another chance that your claim will be denied.
