This is such a comprehensive and detailed instruction sheet that even this granny might one day put it to good use. But how much does it save over buying one. I would like to see some cost assessments and comparisons included. Featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen 2012-2 and also on Computers and Accessories - Quiz. Hugs
  • Big_Joe May 12, 2012 @ 9:58 pm | delete
Thanks SkiesGreen, I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it useful.
I considered putting in a cost assessment table, but I also figured that the biggest savings would be in the learning aspect of it.

Once you know how to assemble a computer, when the time came, you would be able to upgrade it yourself, giving your computer more life and saving money at the same time.

In most cases a prebuilt computer will only allow for a limited upgrade due to the motherboards (which is never listed on the box) usually being close to maximum capacity in the amount of memory when you first buy it.

The motherboard is what determines what you will ever be able to do with your computer and when you build your own... You Have More Control. :)

I was lucky to get this lens on time, just sold my old PC and was confused over whether to assemble at home or go for assembled from market. Now I am convinced that I can do it better at my own. Thanks for this beautifully written lens besides all the useful information.
  • Big_Joe May 7, 2012 @ 7:29 am | delete
I'm glad you found this web page useful CableTiesAndMore, I've always been a firm believer in that people can easily build a better computer than what a pre-assembled computer company will sell.

Very useful lens. It's time I got a new desktop, mine is over 3 years old and starting to struggle with some modern software. Maybe I'll think about building my own again this time.
  • Big_Joe Apr 27, 2012 @ 9:17 pm | delete
Thanks SudokuNut, Building your own computer to me is always the way to go because when you buy a prebuilt system, 3-5 years is about the lifespan of it, then it starts getting outdated and will not keep up with the newer software (just like you described in your comment).

Just remember that when you build your own computer, make sure you get a motherboard that you will be able to upgrade (memory and processor) and then in 3-5 years instead of buildiing a new one, just upgrade your memory or processor, then your computer should fine for another 3-5 years... :)

I would love to build my own computer. I once worked for a school district that had students build all of the computers from parts (every computer used on every campus). I should have joined in and learned from the students. That would have been very rewarding.
