Let me ask you a question. If your computer was physically destroyed (in a fire for example) would you have an accessible backup of your personal computer files?

These days we store everything on our computers. Our family pictures, financial data, music libraries and the list goes on forever. It's enormous!

In this lens I'll show you how to backup computer files using 3 methods.

Why You Need To Backup Your Computer Files

Hard drive failure is one of the single biggest reasons why you need to take action and get anything important on your computer backed up.

Hard drives usually have about a 3 year life span. After that 3 years is up, your taking a major gamble with your data. Once your hard stops phyiscally working (and it will) your data will have to be retrieved by a professional if you didn't back it up yourself.

Fire, flood, theft and electrical damage are a few other reasons why all your computer files should be backed up at least on a daily basis. These things do happen and you need to be ready!

Backup Method 1: Online Backup Of Computer Files

Carbonite and Mozy Online Backup

Online Backup is the absolute best way to backup your computer files. Why?

1. It's automatic. Once you download and install the backup software you can choose what documents should always be backed up. The backup software (carbonite or mozy) will backup your critical data on a constant basis. You just set it and forget it!

2. It's unlimited. Yup, that's right! You can backup anything and everything on your computer without having to worry that you're running out of space.

3. It's secure. Your files are stored at a remote data center with 448 bit SSL encryption. What's that mean? You and only you are able to download and access your backed up files.

4. No Worries! You never have to worry about hard drive failure, fire, theft, flood, earthquakes and so on. You know that your files have been backed up automatically everyday.

5. It's fast. After you perform your initial backup your online backup software will only backup new or changed files.

Backup Method 2: Backing Computer Files To CD\DVD

One of the old tried and true ways to backup computer files is burning a CD or DVD. This method requires a lot of effort if you want to stay constantly backed up since it's a manual multi-step process.

Here are some things you'll need in order to backup your files to CD or DVD:

1. A CD or DVD burner (drive).

2. Blank CD's or DVD's.

3. Windows XP or Vista.

Backing up your files is as easy as dragging them to the CD/DVD icon in your My Computer and releasing them.

As soon as you release the mouse button your files will be queued for burning. To finish the burning process you can double click your CD/DVD drive and click "burn these files".

Once the burning has completed click the eject button on the CD\DVD drive to complete the process.

Backup Method 3: Backing Up Computer Files To An External USB Drive

Another way you can backup your computer files is by using an usb external hard drive or flash drive (memory stick).

Items you'll need for this type of backup are either:

1. An External USB Hard Drive

2. A USB Flash Drive

The process is pretty simple. You'll connect your USB drive to a free USB port on your computer.

Your external hard drive will now show up as another hard drive in your "my computer" in XP or "Computer" in Vista. You may now copy your personal documents to this external drive.

A lot of people backup their computer files this way and it works pretty well if you're very diligent in keeping a consistent backup schedule. Also, keep in mind that your data is still at risk of fire, flood, theft, equipment failure and so on.
