Such funny pix and helpful advice! Love your work. My fat Persian cat however, would not. He needs a bath from time to time and dopey as he is, he knows when it's coming....lol. Thanks for a great read.

I once had a neutered male cat, Petey, who begged to come into the shower stall with me. He enjoyed getting sprayed with warm water. When he'd had enough, he knew how to push open the magnetic latch door and let himself out. One morning he repeated the routine THREE times. Quite a character...

Fabulous lens on a very tricky subject! I have a special needs cat who must have a partial bath every day. Also, I've worked in the veterinary field for 10 years and have even seen some professional groomers balk at bathing cats! Thanks for compiling all this great advice and doing it in such a humorous way!
  • JohannaBaker Feb 1, 2012 @ 9:48 pm | delete
Great lens! My cat Elmo is now in his 15th year and he is an angel to bathe..not that he used to be but I would always speak softly to him, and make sure I had everything ready before hand and gave him a cuddle in a dry towel after until his growling told me he has really had enough of my attentions, lol! Now he sits in the bath still with me holding him, but he doesn't struggle and wail now...
Good advice, I do that and I can confirm that it works incredibly well!

I have 5 cats. The one I thought would be the the terror to bathe, was the only sweetheart of the bunch . She really enjoyed it. The one I thought would be real easy to bathe nearly tore me up! You just never know! I have a gentle way about me but that did very little to soothe them. Bath time has not been fun therefore it does not happen very often.
  • GrannyAlice Jan 28, 2012 @ 7:40 pm | delete
    wonderful!
  • Pastiche Jan 28, 2012 @ 5:06 pm | delete
Our cats do NOT love baths, but we've learned to follow the same steps you recommend when they do need bathing. Our older male cat is more likely to hold still for the indignity, howling only a few times at the outset. Our younger cat, well, she'd fly if possible to escape the bath. It's definitely a two-person task to bathe a cat. The treats afterward to seem to entice forgiveness, until the next time ...

None of my cats liked to take bath. It was always a big battle for me and them.

Funny lens. My friend had a joke on how to best give a cat a bath: Put some shampoo in the toilet bowl, place cat in toilet, close lid, flush. Good for a joke but never to actually be done in real life!
  • canoz Jan 26, 2012 @ 2:17 am | delete
A very well written and useful lens! Entertaining and educational. We always bathed our cats when I was younger. My mum did it regularly from when they were kittens and although they didn't like it they didn't fuss too much. My cat is a rescue cat and already full grown when I got her. I can't imagine putting her personality any where near water!! ;-)
  • Pmona Jan 25, 2012 @ 11:50 pm | delete

  • SRitchieable Jan 25, 2012 @ 6:41 pm | delete
Wow! Thanks for making a lens on this; I thought my family was the only family that ever had to wash a cat. Actually cats - 20+, all rescues. A 'first bath' is essential to exterminate all the fleas - if only because the water and shampoo drive them from their hiding places allowing them to be abolished. (Down with fleas!) We usually use the kitchen sink, which has the advantage of curtains which the cat can 'claw' (rather than us) whilst being washed. And a GIGANTIC TOWEL is a must afterwards, large enough to wrap their tail too. Otherwise the water drips down their tail and everywhere. Cats are great, and they're still great even though they hate being washed. But they nearly always forgive you afterwards, or if not immediately the next day. Love the cat-bathing-pics! Thanks!
  • Lindrus Jan 25, 2012 @ 2:16 pm | delete

Such a cute and informative lens... Love the bit about how to bathe skunk off of a cat. We have quite a few skunks in our neighbourhood, and there are usually at least one dog each week with it (I have a cat, so it is nice to know in my case as well).
  • marciag Jan 25, 2012 @ 8:00 am | delete

When my cat was in his twenties, I had to bathe him and he seemed to appreciate it, but you did have to be gentle and aware of how you were doing it. Good page on bathing cats.
  • MariaDSk Jan 23, 2012 @ 8:18 pm | delete
For the skunk spray shampoo idea... surely if your cat is one that tries to demolish the whole house during bath time in an attempt to escape then hydrogen peroxide is rather dangerous for it? If it doesn't sit still it could get into its eyes, mouth, earths :/
  • Frankster Jan 24, 2012 @ 12:06 pm | delete
Thank you so much for reminding me of 3 other items I should have -- and now have -- put on the recipe: 1) put cotton balls in cats ears, 2) put drop of olive oil in cats eyes to prevent irritation 3) wear clothes to protect your hands. Bear hugs, Frankster
  • MariaDSk Jan 24, 2012 @ 3:46 pm | delete
No problem at all :). I just remembered my own "experience" with peroxide... not so pleasant. Otherwise love the article , though doubt would help my grandmas cat. The thing in an attempt to escape managed to climb, claws and all, all over my mums back who was holding her .

    Awesome pictures! Great lens.
I just recently gave a shower to my neighbor’s cat accidently. It was sitting outside under the pipe from where the cold water came out and I heard the laud grrrrr meow, that’s how I came to know that the cat was there. Before I read your lens I had been convinced that the cats do not take bath. Thanks.
  • TravelingRae Jan 23, 2012 @ 4:07 pm | delete
I had a cat once who loved the water. She'd come lie on my tummy in the bath, keeping head above the water, and she'd purr if I scooped water in my hands and gently poured it over her back. My other cats, though, don't like the water and have never been bathed.
  • canoz Jan 26, 2012 @ 2:21 am | delete
Rae your comment is delightful and almost beyond belief except we too owned a cat who loved water. He would lay on the side of the bathtub and paddle his paws in it when my dad bathed each night. When it rained he would go out to play by walking up and down the drain way in the run off. Big smiles here. Thanks for bringing up those special memories.

We had a curious kitten that stepped into the basin of motor oil a neighbor had just drained from his truck. He was covered. It took 4 baths in Dawn to get it all off. The kitten was fine through all of it. A few months later, when he got into something else, we figured he would be easy to bathe, that he would be used to it...NOT!

My cat does not love baths, but unfortunately there was a point at which she was not bathing her behind, and needed one badly. I didn't follow these steps exactly, but I believe at the end of it she was calm and over her momentary trauma. Next time I need to do it, I'm totally coming back for instructions!

My cat, who was huge and psychotic, was best friends with a pig in the local park and one day fell into her pen; obviously the stuff he had all over him was extremely nasty and he could never have washed it off himself. It took three adults to hold and bath him, and all of us wound up needing serious bandaging, but he did wind up clean. Then he went outside and hunted water rats in a drainage ditch... Great lens, very funny and very informative, blessing this.

  • Frankster Aug 18, 2011 @ 12:53 pm | delete
I've had to bathe the rear end of a very large cats several times for the same reason. You do need another person to help. You can wrap a towel around the front legs and body, leaving the rear end and legs exposed. The put warm, soapy water in a tub or bowl in the sink, and use a cup to pour the water over him and a rag to get the stuff out. When you are done, put warm water in the bowl and rinse him off using a cup. Dry him good with several towels. Make sure to talk to him while you bathe him, and when you are done, give him a treat and keep him warm.

I had a cat 10 years ago who loved baths. She come and lie on my stomach when I had a soak and would purr and purr and purr. When we were done, she'd go lie on her towel and wait for me to wrap her up and hold her until she was dry. I didn't have her for long, but she sure was memorable! (the photos in this lens are too funny!)
  • AddaptAbilities Jul 31, 2011 @ 4:44 pm | delete
We had to flea-dip Piglet when she came home, and she purred the entire time. At one point I *tried* to bathe CC because she had gotten a spot of what looked like motor oil on her back. The experience taught me that holding onto a cat that doesn't want to be held is nigh impossible. She left puncture wounds on my neck, scalp, and ears as she politely escaped from the situation. I realized that she was more than capable of ripping off my face, she was simply choosing not to do so.

Fortunately, when I described the oil spot to the vet, he said it was too small to really cause problems. Since she's now 17 years old and still healthy and active, he appears to have been right.

Both of mine hate being bathed. They're almost 9, and I started bathing them at 4 months just in case I ever had to when they got older. I've had to a few times over the years, and they both let me, but Kaylynn will sit in the bathtub and scream at the top of her lungs like I'm killing her. She even moves around until she finds the best echo, and then sits facing that way. This has not made us very popular when I used to live in an apartment!
  • momsfunny May 1, 2011 @ 8:40 am | delete
The pictures are just so funny and adorable. I've never seen a cat having so much fun with water, she is like having a great time in a bathtub, so cute! I know someone who is having a hard time giving her cat a bath and I think she will love this! Very helpful and beautiful lens.

yup, she does , i normally uses luke warm water and pour on top of my cat's body using my hand bit by bit , then rubs slowly with a wet soak cloth , and shampoo my cat , next i dry my cat with a dry cloth and use hair dryer at a low speed and after the furs begin to dryoff , i will leave my cat under the morning sun which they normally enjoys
  • pinkrenegade Apr 22, 2011 @ 9:36 pm | delete
I don't think you should bathe your cat. Because majority of the cats don't like it and actually they clean themselves. But probably if your cat smells bad and dirty, that's the time to bathe your cat.
  • KathyT Apr 10, 2011 @ 2:43 pm | delete
Although my own Kitty is no longer with us, she DESPISED having a bath. She was beautiful - a white furball (and when I say "ball" ... well, let's just say that we spoiled her a bit too much!). :) This is a great lens. As helpful as it is entertaining. You did a great job of balancing the education content w/ the humor (although I'm guessing that the kitty models were not finding humor in their situations! lol!)

I picked up a couple cats today, only one will let me hold her and she feels like she has dirt everywhere, you know how a dog is when they haven't had a bath in a while and you get that stuff on your hands? That's what it is....she smells like dirt to. I have never bathed a cat before, she seems sweet and is declawed in the front, any suggestions?
  • Frankster Dec 19, 2010 @ 3:52 pm | delete
First, I am sorry to hear that the cat was declawed and hope that you are aware that s/he should be kept indoors only for her safety.

Now, about a bath. You need to have someone else help you, preferably someone who knows how to scruff a cat (hold it behind its neck like the momma cat would. They need to place their other hand under her bottom otherwise a cat hanging can be too heavy on its body and hurt it.

Before they scruff the cat, get everything prepared as I mention above. If they are scruffing her right, the cat is pretty immobilized and can be washed. Make sure afterward to reward her with a treat.

Let me know how it goes. Bear hugs, Frankster

I've showered my cat with the sprayer and he likes it better than being dunked into the bath.
  • Frankster Dec 11, 2010 @ 2:30 am | delete
I have a couple of cats that like the sprayer too and it works well for them. Most people just don't know how to use a sprayer well enough so I tend not to recommend it. They have it on too high, they don't use it long enough and many end up spraying the cats face and eyes and the cat freaks.

Helpful and funny... I will share with my friends that have cats! I laughed at all of the creative captions. This is a purr-fect lens :-)

great website full of handy tips for bathing cats! thanks!!

I used to have a water loving kitten once. He'd jump on the sink every time the water was running and put his paws under. After someone took a shower he jumped in and tried to catch the drops from the shower head. When I was taking a bath in the tub he jumped in and lay on my tummy. That was way before YouTube though (or even the Internet) and I don't think we have any pictures of it, sadly. Awesome lens, Frankie!
  • Frankster Oct 27, 2010 @ 12:15 pm | delete
I would have loved to see that. I have a couple of cats that will walk around the tub but heaven forbid they fall in! lol Thanks for visiting my lens. Bear hugs, Frankie

It has been a long, long time since I have had a cat, but I do remember with horror trying to bath them for various reasons. Its even impossible to give them medicine.

Great lens and some of the best pictures I have seen.

Oh, me, the poor cats! But I do have to admit, the photos are pretty funny! Thanks for the tips on cat bathing! We did have to give our cat a bath once - and it wasn't a fun experience for either of us!
  • jptanabe Sep 8, 2010 @ 1:38 pm | delete
Oh dear, memories of my failed attempt at giving one of our cats a bath! Next time (if absolutely necessary) I'll follow your advice.

This is a terrific lens! Unfortunately, we lost our own Kitty almost 2 years ago (and miss her terribly). I so wish I had seen this lens when we had her - this excellent information would have come in VERY handy! A big "thumbs up" to you, Frankster! Nice job!
    :) Kath

I'm back for a visit. This is such a great lens. Many years ago I had two cats that loved a good bath. The two cats I have now hate it. I love the images and the videos. Blessed by The HorseAndPony Angel. http://www.squidoo.com/horseandpony-squidangel

Only attempt to bathe a cat if absolutely necessary. Had to once, got him in the bathroom, closed the door, got him in the bath, had to hold him so tight in the water I eventually noticed I was drowning the poor thing, dried him, opened the door to let him out and his sister was sitting there, she attacked him since he didn't smell the same. Poor thing ended up sitting under the dinning room table. As I said only if absolutely necessary. Thanks for the fun lens.

Wow, I have never attempted to give a cat a bath. Very useful information if I ever get brave enough. Those photos are too funny! Lensrolling to Squidoo Pets and Squidoo Pets Two and Pet Talk.

This reminds me of my first and only encounter with trying to give a cat a bath. My friend and I when we were 4 years old thought my cat needed a bath. She didn't like it!!! Great lens! Blessed by a Squid Angel.

I loved this lens so much that I came back and *blessed* it (now that I am able to!). (:
  • arncyn Nov 26, 2009 @ 12:12 am | delete
I love love love this lens! I once made the novice mistake of leaving the water running while bathing our kitty - the result? Painful scratches on my forearm - so it's indeed a no-no. Bookmarking this for future reference. (:
  • Janet1 Nov 17, 2009 @ 1:44 pm | delete
I had to use the skunk shampoo recipe and it worked like a charm. My poor Bootsy is now a very brown cat but she's still beautiful. Thanks!
  • jgelien Nov 13, 2009 @ 8:38 am | delete
My cat hates water in any form so when I want him bathed he ends up going to the groomer. He even freaks if you accidentally drip water on him! Loved your lens, 5*****

Thanks for the kudos. The banner shows up fine for me and the link works so I don't know what to say. I fixed the typo. Thanks for letting me know. And a big bear hug for the Angel blessing! Frankie

    Wonderful lens!
Oh, your 'Entirely Pets' banner is missing and you have a small typo in the 'tomato juice' sentence. Also you've been blessed >.>
  • HorseAndPony Nov 3, 2009 @ 2:29 pm | delete
This was so funny. The images are great. We give our cats baths when necessary. They hate it. However, years ago I had two Siamese and they loved water. Anything filled with water and they were in.
  • susannaduffy Oct 26, 2009 @ 8:14 pm | delete
In this lens you explain clearly how NOT to bathe a cat. Most of the photos are from people who don't have the good sense to treat a cat with respect. I love the photo of the Siamese in the hand basin. Now, there's a well treated moggy!
  • Frankster Oct 26, 2009 @ 6:33 pm | in reply to susannaduffy | delete
Susanna, I don't think they were meant to be cruel. Hopefully the cats were bathed because they needed it (skunk spray, oil, etc.). And the photos taken as an afterthought and the cats were dried and cuddled a bunch afterward. Bear hugs, Frankster
  • susannaduffy Oct 26, 2009 @ 5:50 am | delete
What dreadfully cruel photos. What were those people thinking?

Thanks Janet. BTW, Janet is a friend of mine. She called me last week saying Bootsy had been skunked and what would get rid of it. I gave her the info I shared above but at the time I didn't have 1st hand knowledge that it would work. Now I do so I added the module to cover it.
  • Janet1 Aug 1, 2009 @ 6:55 pm | delete
I can vouch for the skunk removal shampoo. My Bootsy just had a run in with a skunk and I guess lost. Anyway, I tried your recipe and it worked! Thank you for sharing.

Oh my gosh, these photos are hilarious! And a bit pathetic at the same time. :) I had two cats for 18 years apiece, and I must admit, I never attempted to bathe either one. Then again, they never really seemed to need it. And if they had .... hm. Well, I would have made my husband do the deed.
  • Superwife Jul 2, 2009 @ 5:42 am | delete
total riot! super cool lens, completely entertaining and very informative! :)
  • daoine Jun 23, 2009 @ 9:29 pm | delete
Oh this lens made me laugh so much! I've had two of my cats accidentally land in the bath with me due to curiosity (one jumped in, not knowing there was wetness inside, and the other slipped while showing off on the rim of the bath). The third cat loves to climb in the bath when it's dry as it is nice and cool.
  • Janet1 Jun 21, 2009 @ 4:44 pm | delete
Funny and also very informative. Thanks. I'll bookmark this page for when I have to bathe my cat again.

This lens is GREAT. I have given many baths to my cats over the years and I have seen many crazy looks out of them just like in the pictures. 5*'s for sure!

    Poor babies!
  • Vladi Jun 17, 2009 @ 7:26 pm | delete
What were those people thinking to torture a cat in that way? That poor chap hanging on to the taps in the first photo broke my heart. Thank heavens you explain the way to bathe a cat, I only hope that the ignorant people will read how to do it. Personally, I enjoy my bath time, the woman who feeds me must have read your lens before.
  • CreativeArtist Jun 16, 2009 @ 7:06 pm | delete
Nice lens. Luckily our cat stays pretty clean. Once in a while, I wipe her off with a pretty damp paper towel.
  • kiwisoutback Jun 16, 2009 @ 11:36 am | delete
That hairless cat in the video doesn't seem to mind taking a bath at all. I remember bath time was pretty traumatic for my Mom's cats, so it was only when-necessary occurrance. Great work on this caption lens, one of the best I've seen! Squid Angel blessed!
  • GypsyPirate Jun 16, 2009 @ 8:39 am | delete
lol - My cats did not like this lens nearly as much as I did.
