How to Be a Good Golf Caddie - Seven Essential Tips

Ranked #1,126 in Sports & Recreation, #24,356 overall

Tips for Aspiring Golf Caddies

The duties and skills needed to become a good golf caddie vary greatly. Probably the most important thing is to know what your player wants from you. Some golfers simply want you to "shut up and lug the bag" while others want much more information and support from their caddies.
While most of the caddies on the professional tours earn a salary plus five to ten percent of the earnings that their player makes, those jobs are obviously quite limited. This lens will instead concentrate on tips to help the "newbie" caddie.

Seven Tips for the Beginner Caddie

Quite obviously, some general knowledge of the game of golf can be helpful (but not essential) for any caddie. A newer caddie should keep in mind that an average golf course is around four miles long, so carrying a heavy golf bag for that distance requires some degree of physical fitness. Here are some more specific tips for a beginner caddie.

Understand What Your Player Wants From You

Before you even get to the first tee, find out from your golfer how involved they want you to be during the round. Some players like to have their caddies read putts, tell them yardages, etc, while others just want someone to carry the bag.1 point

Keep Up

Few things can frustrate a golfer more than a caddy that cannot keep up. Do whatever it takes to avoid falling behind.1 point

Help Maintain the Course

Course maintenance includes replacing divots and raking sand traps after your players hits their shot.1 point

Dress Correctly

If no uniform is required, wear some nice cotton khaki pants or shorts, along with a collared shirt. Most caddies like to wear sneakers have a hat handy as well.0 points

Be Prepared

Have a scorecard, pencil, golf balls and tees ready. Also partially wet down a towel for cleaning clubs and balls when necessary or requested.0 points

Pay Attention

Always watch your golfer hit his or her shot so you can help locate it if is off-target. Also try to watch the other players in the group hit for the same reason.0 points

Don't Get In the Way

After your golfer selects their club, stand off to the side and remain still and silent. When all members of your group has reached the putting surface, pull the pin and stay off the green. Replace the pin when all players have putted out.0 points

Caddies can really help settle the mindset of a golfer, as quite a high level golfer I've found that a good caddie can calm your nerves and present you with the sensible options as opposed to the all or nothing approach.
