A U.K. Indie Comedy

How To Be is a British indie comedy about a struggling musician, Arthur, played by Robert Pattinson. The movie was filmed before the making of Twilight and has been screened in film festivals all over the world. The theatrical release will be in 2009. We all know and Robert as the romantic hero in Twilight, but I am very excited to see him portray Arthur in How to Be.

“How To Be” Is a tender story of the struggle to come of age on your own, in your terms, and having no clue how to do it!

Having read a few interviews with the movies’ star, Robert Pattinson, I wonder if Art is the antithesis of Pattinson’s outward persona? Besides the acting experience and the income, I wonder if this is what drew him to the part?

The movie, like the character, is clumsy, awkward, warm, and quirky. Art’s depressive personality and inability to make decisions, leaves him immobile. His fractured relationship with his parents is more exaggerated by his choice of “mates”. One an agoraphobic and annoying twit, whose daddy pays for his apartment and everything in it . The other a “Mr.. I AM All That” who takes a tumble off his board at the skate park and begins to cry like a five year old.

The only glimmer of hope for Art is his relationship with his girlfriend. Realizing that he’s not the “brooding mysterious type” as she initially thought, she breaks it off with him. With nowhere else to go, he moves back in with his parents and promptly gets fired from a “volunteer job” at a senior center.

Dazed by his strokes of bad fortune, Art wanders into a bookstore. Here he comes face to face with a book that epitomizes a basic human frailty, the inability to accept blame. The book, aptly entitled “It’s Not Your Fault” sends Art spiraling full force into “fixing” himself. Liquidating an inheritance fund he hires the author of the book to be his personal therapist; his personal “move into my parent’s house with me” personal therapist. Often funny to watch (Art trying to get a hug from his mother is hilarious and so sad at the same time.) And the “Let’s do something as a family, like eat dinner together!” gets him a trip to the cemetery to visit his grand dad’s grave.

The film showcases Pattinson’s raw acting ability. Often contrived, when he allows himself to “ne” Art and not Pattinson’s or the director’s vision of Art, he plays the role flawlessly.

I was left feeling, if I had his parent’s I would probably go and lay in a road somewhere!
I was also left with wanting to take the boy to the Dr. to get some “Happy Pills”.

March 1, 2009
Nashville, TN USA

I just returned from the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. I went to the premiere showing of “How to Be” last evening, Feb. 28th at the California Theater, which held 1,300 people. On Saturday evening, it was packed with fans ranging from teens to adult seniors – both men and women. By the way, “How to Be” will be showing again on Monday evening, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

As soon as the movie started, Rob Pattinson’s voice began to narrate a flashback scene of himself as a child. The fans in the audience went wild. Then, people settled down as the movie unfolded. It is a wonderfully quirky, hilarious and poignant film.

Robert Pattinson is brilliant as Arthur, a misfit, nerdy, twentysomething living in London, who’s having a “quarter-life crisis” as he calls it in the movie. He fancies himself as a poet/musician and drifts along in life practically invisible to those around him while working his day job at a grocery store. He is depressed and can’t figure out why no one loves him. Especially his parents and a girlfriend who has just broken up with him. He lives with a guy friend who has his own set of problems, but moves back in with his parents while embarking on a quest to find happiness. While browsing in a bookstore, he sees a book entitled “It’s Not Your Fault.” It intrigues Arthur and he takes the money he inherited from his grandfather and invites the elderly “self-help” author from Canada to come to London to live with him (and his parents) and coach him. This begins a hilarious and painful journey about dysfunction and growing up.

The movie is a comedy and a modern day commentary on therapists, dysfunctional families, parents who are always “too busy” to give their kids attention, and how twentysomething individuals are having life crises before they reach middle age. Rob gave the perfect performance – hilarious, yet insightful and yearning. In fact, he was a genius when it came to fusing comedy and pain into the character. The audience could feel his pain and often let out sighs and ooohs and ahhs when Rob (Art) experienced something particularly sad. Often, the movie was so funny, I could barely hear the dialogue because everyone was laughing so hard.

Rob performs a couple of songs in the movie, which are going to be on the soundtrack.

In the end, Rob learns on his own “How to Be…”

After the movie was over, Director/Writer Oliver Irving came on stage and answered questions from the audience. Someone asked, “What was it like to work with Rob Pattinson?”

Irving said, “I auditioned actors for a year for this part of Art. All the guys that came in for the part said they had read the script and loved it. Then, Rob came in and said he had read it and thought it was funny, but he asked me questions about it. I could tell that he had really thought about it and was interested in bringing a certain depth to it. I knew that in Harry Potter, he mostly just had to look good, but for this part, he had to act. Rob was intent on making it the best he could. He put a lot of his own feelings and experiences into the character of Art. In the bar scene, the actors improvised a lot and Rob would giggle a lot when they messed up. He was great to work with and he took the role very seriously. We would go over each scene before he did it and talk about the feelings and emotions needed. When we shot the mirror scene, it was important for Rob to get it right quickly because we were limited on our time. He nailed it. He was just soooo good.” (As for me, I think it’s one of the best scenes in the movie.)

Irving said that the movie will be in U.S. theaters at the end of April. (The soundtrack should be released soon.) He said the DVD will also be available after the release of the movie and that it has lots of extra, hilarious scenes with Rob.

Everyone – go see the movie. It is wonderful, inspiring and heartfelt! And, you will love seeing Rob Pattinson as a lovable Nerd.
