If you are fed up with constipation then you've joined one of the most populated clubs in the planet. Look for constipation in blogs. Talk about constipation with the people you meet at your local gym. Ask about constipation to your doctor. Slip the word in any conversation that you are having with a close friend. You will discover something: that half of the people you know, particularly if they are women, are suffering from different degrees of constipation.
I don't think constipation is considered an illness. Actually most of the constipation I am talking about here --chronic constipation-- is not considered life threatening. Sudden constipation does capture the attention of a good doctor because it may be the symptom of some serious condition.
But for the ones who fight with constipation every morning since adolescence, or even since childhood, there's nothing much that they can find beyond exhausting examinations and tests and analysis except some advice about taking fiber and the prescription of a laxative that in any case is going to be prescribed only for a limited time. Laxatives are not good on a regular basis, they can harm your intestines badly, apparently.
Mostly, chronically constipated people are in constant search for new tricks to help them, because with constipation most of the time what works today might not work tomorrow or next week, and they need to move on and find something else, something new to give them hope and a little relief at least for a while.
So let's do exactly that. Let's give constipation sufferers a small list of tips big and small that might bring them relief and hope.

I- DEALING WITH CHRONIC CONSTIPATION WITH HELPERS THAT YOU FIND IN YOUR KITCHEN
Great tips from the family notebook
a) DRINK WATER. In general, try to increase your consumption of water. Most of the time we drink too little. (They say that when you feel hungry in between meals it's not your need for food that manifests in the hunger but the need for water).
BUT THIS IS THE TIP ABOUT WATER: To beat constipation some people are very happy drinking a big glass of hot water with some fresh lemon juice, first thing in the morning.
b) EAT YOUR OATMEAL. Many people are satisfied with the fiber they get from oatmeal, particularly the old fashioned one that takes longer to cook. Breakfast is the best moment for oatmeal consumption but if you prefer some other type of breakfast then you can make a delicious soup with your oats. Just cook a good stock (another time I will give recipes for this) and keep it in the freezer in several containers; use one of these to prepare an excellent soup with the oatmeal and some chopped vegetables. You might belong to the group that eliminates constipation just by drinking hot water in the morning and eating oatmeal at any one of the meals, according to preference...
c) EAT WHOLE RICE. Not all whole cereals are created equal. Go and try to fix your constipation with whole wheat bread, and no matter how many fancy cereals are added to the formula you can be pretty sure that it won't do a thing to alleviate constipation. Now, white rice might be one of the most sure things to aggravate your chronic constipation. This is not always true for every individual, but there is a general consensus about white rice. As opposed to this, you have whole rice. Any whole rice lover will tell you that their favorite food is paramount in virtues. Whole rice is beneficial for your intestines, do not ask me why, it's just a fact of nature. Many people are able to get away and stay away from constipation just by eating delicious whole rice. You use whole rice as a substitute for the white.
d) PRUNES OR PRUNE JUICE. The old helper, well known around the world to help alleviate constipation: prunes. It's enough to drink the juice at any time of day. It's enough to munch the prune itself, between three to six every day. It's enough to have as dessert an excellent compote with prunes cooked in it. Any one of the formulas work: munching on prunes, having prunes compote (cooked prunes), or drinking prune juice. For some people it's their daily life saver against chronic constipation.

II- DEALING WITH CHRONIC CONSTIPATION WITH THINGS THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY
Great tips from people who know... but better talk to your doctor or health practitioner
a) TRIPHALA CHURNA. This is a popular remedy in India, from the Ayurvedic every day pharmacy. But even though it has fenomenal benefits, I don't think you can consider it a medicine, it's just dried powdered fruit. The translation of the name is: three fruits powder. Churna is powder.
No doubt you can buy Triphala in capsules, they encapsulate anything nowadays. But it's much more expensive and you cannot taylor the amount you take exactly to your needs, which you can easily do with the powder. Anyway I've included both below for you to ponder about.
Triphala Churna is a rejuvenator, they say in the Indian texts. But for us what is really interesting is that Triphala is a great promoter of complete digestion. It helps you all the way from the moment you start digesting your food to the moment you get rid of the waste. It's very difficult to have constipation with Triphala.
You have to take aproximately one teaspoonful of the powder with a small amount of water, then you wash what's left in the glass with more water. You can take more if you need it, or less.
You can find Triphala more and more everywhere. I think it might be because one famous TV doctor declared that Triphala was the only laxative that he adviced for every day use. I'm not sure that it's correct to call it a laxative but that's what he said.
People experience a type of elation when they start observing the good effects of Triphala in their lives.
b)DIGESTIVE ADVANTAGE DAILY CONSTIPATION FORMULA- This is a probiotic, the living microscopic things that our intestines cannot go without in order to fonction. I discovered this probiotic in a British blog, where the moderator recommended it but lamented that it was an American product, not so easy to buy for the Brits.
In the old times people used to have a living yogurt culture constantly going on at home. Nowadays people buy commercial yogurt that I suspect doesn't have living organisms, or so little. That's why you need to buy probiotics.
Now the difficulty with probiotics is that even though they announce zillions of living lactobacillus acidophilus per container, very little number pass the barrier of digestive acid in the stomach.
Apparently this probiotic from Ganeden, Digestive Advantage, has a special formulation, secret, of course, that makes their acidophilus guys survive until they reach the intestines where they happily do their job.
Many people only need one and in rare cases two of these capsules every morning to get rid of their constipation.
c)MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE-
Magnesium is a very needed mineral that people tend to have less with age, and is considered by some an indispensable supplement. (If you read Spanish go see my website Vivir, at http://vivirconbienestar.info/ and there you will find more information). It´s not easily absorbed and mostly it disappears quickly with urine. This form of magnesium, the mg chloride, is nicely absorbed and used by your body. It´s safe to take and should be taken daily to protect your heart, to manage the calcium in your body avoiding calcium deposits in joints and kidneys and many other advantages. (The only warning is: if your kidneys are not functioning you should not take mg lest you produce an hypermagnesemia in your body, but this is a rare condition).
The reason for mentioning the Magnesium Chloride here is: Magnesium is the ultimate weapon against chronic constipation, the one thing that will work for people that do not find durable relief with any of the previous tips nor all the others tips that circulate out there.
It´s difficult to fine this type of magnesium, don´t ask me why. But you can buy it under the name NIGARI, as cooking ingredient to make tofu. Sounds bizarre but it´s like that.
The Magnesium Chloride comes in cristalised form, like a very white salt. You mix three tablespoons with 1 quart of water. No need for refrigerate it. Drink a cup a day, or two if you need it. You might need a little bit more Magnesium to produce the effect you desire at the beginning, but as you persist, you might need less Magnesium to be free of constipation every day of your life. In any case it´s a protection for your heart and your bones.
You can also use a powdered form of magnesium called Magnesium Oxide. It´s difficult to absorb, and thus lacks the other great virtues of Magnesium Chloride, but for people who are followers of the oxygen therapy it has the virtue of releasing oxygen in your intestines and they say that oxygen helps your good bacteria to bloom while not being friendly with the bad ones.

- Liz, hello. Yes, I was visiting again but also, in practically all of my lenses I advice readers to go for a visit too. You know, chronic constipation is a very common nuisance that has not been investigated enough. Although it has many components --hormones, diet, age, lack of exercise and what not-- chances are that bad stress might be one of them. And you and I know that playing a musical instrument is a great way of getting away from bad stress. The effort of learning how to play music is a type of stress but an excellent one. Again I advice to visit your lens that is featured below.
