How To Become A Grant Writer Without Experience

How I Got Into The Grant Writing Business:

I have been a grant writer for well over ten years. I did not get into grant writing by taking a class and/or getting a job. I volunteered at a Homeless Shelter when I was a Senior in High School and I helped with office work. After a while volunteering there I became fascinated by the process and the Fundraiser used me to do some research and let me help her do some field work. I was immediately hooked. Through the years before actually working as a Grant Writer I worked in few other fields, such as Career Counseling but somehow I have always worked in a industry that I could find use for my passion to find funds for good causes.

So when someone asks me how to get into the grant writing field as a career or asks me "what degree do I need to become a grant writer" I tell them that there is more then one way. While it will help you get hired in a few companies to have a bachelor degree in English or Non Profit Business, many non-profits understand that great grant writers come from varied backgrounds. You do not have to have a special degree or certificate to become a paid Grant Writer but you will need experience behind you.

Do You Have To Have A Certification To Be A Grant Writer?

The process of grant writing can be learned by going through a class, by reading/researching and by trial and error. A grant writer does not have to be the worlds best writer or have went through a long certification process. However, ever successful grant writer must have the skill to write with passion and clarity.

How Can I Get Grant Writing Experience If I Can Not Get A Job Without Having Experience?

Steps You Can Take...........

How To Get A Job As A Grant WriterA person does not have to have a special degree to become a grant writer, but someone would be hard pressed to find a job as a grant writer without having experience. While this sounds like a double edged sword, there is a way around the problem.

Volunteering is the easiest and most common way to get experience. Many churches, shelters, schools, daycare and non profits would love a volunteer to help out with grant writing. Just be prepared that not all your work will probably be a hundred percent grant writing. But as you become more skilled in grant writer you will be able to carry on more work and be able to learn more.

If you work in a area that receives grant funding you may be able to gain some grant writing experience while working by carrying on more responsibilities. Many jobs in the non profit field would love for their employees to be more active in the grant seeking and writing process, so sometimes all you need to do is ask.

There's a lot of satisfaction to grant writing, as you know your projects will do so much good if they are funded. I agonized over the grants I wrote for the library, but it felt marvelous when they were selected.

I worked for an umbrella human services organization, and was lucky enough to be sent to a grant writing class. While you can certainly learn the process by trial and error, investing in even a one day seminar from a reputable agency can more than pay for itself if you learn some basics about why we have grant funding and what the funding agencies are attempting to do by financing projects through grant funding.
