Write, write, write, practice, practice, practice and promote your music on an everyday basis! This is crucial as it will allow you to constantly move forward and monitor the results.

It is so important that you spend few hours a day trying to come up with new melodies, riffs and lyrics. Do it even if there will be no inspiration around and you won't feel like making music at all. Ask them what they think about different parts of the songs you've written, what could be changed etc. After all it is them that you're writing for. You can also ask your friends and family but be careful as they will not always tell you the truth :) Trust me, I speak from experience.
