How To Bonsai - Simple Watering guide
Correct Watering is The First Step To Healthy Bonsai
Bonsai, In Japanese, Loosely translated means the art of cultivating trees. The word is more commonly know in Western Society as miniature or baby trees. Bonsai has grown in popularity over the years. When the trees are properly looked after they grow into very beautiful plants giving pride to any garden. The art itself can also prove very rewarding.Bonsai does not come without its frustrations. The care for the trees is very complicated. It requires monitoring and patience. It is the purpose if this article to give advice on the Care of Bonsai trees, mostly pertaining to watering your bonsai.
It has been said that Watering your bonsai is almost an art in itself, making improper watering a main reason many Bonsai trees die. The key is achieving the right balance. Over watering can flood the root system. This can cause fungi to grow eventually shutting the system down and killing the tree. Under watering can cause the root system to dry out. This dehydrates the plant again, eventually killing it.
With most species of Bonsai, the soil should be in a constant state of dampness. This is true whether the plants are kept indoors or out. If the plants are kept indoors, you should water you bonsai from a can with a fine nozzle. The tree and the soil need a thorough soak. It is best to do this in the morning and again before midday. Check the soil again in the afternoon but watering your Bonsai again should only occur if the soil is dry. Remember, these trees are delicate and over watering is easy to do. You're aiming for dampness, not wetness.
If you decide to keep your trees outside, the good news is the winter months usually supply adequate rain to keep that essential balance. You must still monitor the Bonsai plants regularly and this of course depends on the climate you live in. During the summer months, the watering your Bonsai can vary. You may have to water them several times a week or even several times.
