How to Bottle feed a puppy

Bottle feeding a new born puppy is not as easy as it sounds. There are dangers you must be aware of. Feeding a puppy to much or allowing it to nurse to fast can cause asperation phenomia. There are many reason why you may have to learn how to bottle feed a puppy.
If you decide to take on the task of bottle feeding full time be prepared for two weeks of sleepless nights. Then another week of gettingup for a midnight feeding and a 5 AM feeding .New born pups usually nurse every 3 hours day and night
If you can find some one who has a female dog with milk who will foster your pups it is a much better way to go. Real milk is always the best. .
One very important note , ,It is extremely important that puppies receive colostrum in the first 24 hours of their lives The puppies need this first milk, the majority of the mother's antibodies are passed on to the newborn via colostrum . The pups do not need much of this just one or two feeding will really help the pups imune system.

Suppies and puppy milk formulas

type=textFirst you need a bottle, for large breed dogs you can buy a premature baby nursing bottle. Buy both a fast flow and a slow flow nipple and try them both to see how well the puppy nurses with it. You do not want the puppy to drink to fast or it could get fluid in the lungs and you do not want it so slow that the puppy gets tired trying to get the milk out. A weaker puppy will need faster nipple a puppy with a strong suck action will need a slower nipple. If your puppy is rattly sounding after it drinks that means the flow of milk is to fast.
For small breeds, a puppy nursing bottle would be best, or a syringe can be used in a pinch until you get a bottle.
There are commercial brands of puppy formula. They are very expensive and if I use them I still add a tablespoon of yogurt to the can of formula. I personally find the pups do much better on the home make formula because the eggs are raw and fresh and the yogurt have good live cultures in it.

Here are a few formulas. . Always mix small amounts and keep the unused portion in the fridge.
1 cup milk Goat's milk
1 egg yoke, no whites
2 table spoons of plain yogurt,, do not use the low fat yogurt , puppies need the full fat
1 drop baby vitamins
1 teaspoon corn syrup

If in a bind and you can not find goats milk and must use cows milk try this formula
1 regular size can of Evaporated Milk
1 equal size can of Water
1/3 cup Plain Yogurt, do not use the low fat yogurt , puppies need the full fat
1 egg yoke,, do not use the egg white
1 drop baby vitamins
\

10 oz can of evaporated milk
1 raw egg yoke,, do not add the whites
1 cup of whole yogurt. Not the reduced fat kind
1/3 cup of boiled and cooled water .. let the water cool before adding it to formula
1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup or Corn Syrup

How to get a puppy to except a bottle

how to hold bottleThe first few feedings you may have to force the puppy to except the bottle. Many puppies fight the bottle for the first time. Once the puppy knows that the bottle is where food comes from they get easier to feed.
First of all NEVER lay a puppy on its back to feed it the bottle. The puppy must always be in an upright position. Puppies can easily aspirate milk into their lungs if fed on their back.
You may have to put your finger into the side of the puppies' mouth to open the puppies' mouth, and then inset the bottle in the puppy's mouth.
Look at the pictures to see how the bottle is held, If you hold the bottle in this manor it is easier to keep the puppies head stable and cradled in the palm of your hand.
