Building a Bar in your home: A guide to Planning, Tools, and Bar Stools

Over the past few years, the beer community has seen a surge in popularity. It seems like every local bar or new restaurant opening is promoting all the wide variety of beer they have on tap. From microbrew to imports to just old fashioned home brewing, beer is in now. I am guilty of jumping on this bandwagon as well, especially the home brewing. So if you're like me, and have the patience to get that delicious home brew just right, you want to be able to drink it in an environment that's appropriate for such a drink; a bar. After a bit of research, I was able to build the perfect bar for my basement while saving myself a pretty penny by not hiring someone else to do it. I've put this article together as a resource for all you fellow beer enthusiasts to get started on building your own bar.

Picking a Design:

Before you do anything, you're going to need to settle on a design. Whether it be a 45 degree bar, L shaped bar, liftgate bar, or even a tiki bar; this will ultimately be the most important decision in the whole process. Think about the space you're going to be using. What makes the most sense? The last thing you want to do is set an unreasonable goal and be left with an amazing looking bar, but barely any space to fit guests. Be realistic in your decision making process, it will pay off in the end.

There are plenty of sites out there that have plans out there for free, but also many you have to pay for. So if you do the right research, you'll find exactly what you're looking for. What I ended up doing was finding the plan for an L shaped bar (pretty traditional) and adjusted the dimensions to fit the space I was working with. That's going to be your best bet.

What You Need:

This is all going to depend on your design and any other special touches you may want to add to your bar to make it your own. Needless to say that you're going to need lots of wood and nails! Of course you'll need the necessary tools that go with this; saws, a drill, glue, etc. Below is a list of the type of wood that you'll need for the different parts of the bar. You will need to determine the quantity and length for each of these depending on the design, but these are the types of wood you'll need for each section.

Basic Supplies

  • Framing - 2x4s
  • Skinning - 1/2" Plywood
  • Bar Top - Plywood or other material
  • Bar Railing - Bar Molding (there are stores and websites that sell his specific type of molding)

Where to get supplies:

You will be able to get all of these supplies at your local hardware store or arts and crafts store. Like the bar molding and railings, there are specialty sites where you can find specific bar items. Places such as restaurant and bar supply stores will be able to outfit you with all of the necessary bar paraphernalia you'll need to make your bar feel like, well, a bar. Also, you can't have a proper bar without cool, comfortable retro furniture and counter stools. There are plenty of sites that sell a wide variety of stools to fit your needs. And if you've still got the itch to build something, you can always build your own bar furniture
So here you have it! Everything you need to get started on your own bar where you and your buddies can enjoy that perfect brew. Hopefully this helps put you on the right track to get started.
