Some of the more common woods used in deck building are Redwood, Pressure-treated wood, Cedar and Cypress. Of these 4 Redwood has proven to be the most popular largely because of it's durability. It is also a very easy wood to work with. The second most popular deck wood is pressure treated lumbar which is a bit less expensive that redwood but makes a very good choice if you are looking to spend a bit less on your deck.

A lot of people today are turning towards non wood decks but I still like the look and feel of wood deck designs.

Once you're done you can get to the fun parts of deciding what to put on your deck, a portable charcoal grill is a very popular choice as is some furniture, perhaps some lawn and garden furniture made from wicker, with some nice comfortable chair cushions, and then maybe some nice awnings.
