How to Build a Desktop Computer

NZXT Phantom PC CaseI have been building desktop computers since 1996. It started off as a hobby and building for friends and family but then I started getting many people wanting me to build them their custom made PC. So it quickly turned into a business.

One of my greatest joys is the end results of building a desktop PC that is much cheaper and definitely more powerful than the commercially bought desktop computers which you will find in the high street stores or the popular electronic stores. But by far the greatest joy is the customers feed back, that makes me feel all mellow inside.

Now I have told you a bit about me, we will be going through step by step in building your very own desktop PC all on your own. You will also find pictures to guide you and links as to where you can get the top end PC parts at a bargain price, so look out for those links through out this guide.

Why Should I Build My Own Computer?

desktop pcBuilding your own computer will help you save money and you get what you want and that is a guarantee. It also avoids you getting stuck with the computer you bought from the high street retailer and which they want you to only come to them when you need new parts.

When you how to build a computer you become familiar with the system and have a better understanding of computers in general. You might be scared of buying all the parts and having something go wrong.

Most people like to play it safe and buy a pre-built Dell, HP or Gateway computer. Now there is nothing wrong with that if that's your choice. But take this in mind:

Price and Performance

  • You will save more money building your own desktop pc.

  • You will be able to buy better quality parts for the same price or less as a pre-built pc.

  • Most of all you will be building a cheaper, better pc with much better performance.

Software: Pre-Built PC

  • When you buy a pre-built computer it comes with a lot of software installed on it, most of it you don't need, you will never use them or don't even know what they are.

  • You get loads of demo games and programs which then bugs you to buy or renew the licenses.

  • All this garbage you don't need just clutters the hard drive.

  • Then about a month or so of using your pre-built pc you start noticing the pc is a bit sluggish and you wonder what is wrong with the pc. The backup also takes up some considerable space on your hard drive.

  • A backup of the Operating System is stored on a partition on the hard drive for if in case you messed up and need to reinstall but what if the whole hard drive crashes beyond repair then all is lost.

  • Once the pre-built pc goes out of date, you pretty much need to buy a newer pc as most of them are not designed to be upgradeable.

Software: Home built desktop PC

  • Now on your home built pc, you have only what you need.

  • In my experience building your own desktop pc is a big money saver.

  • As technology progresses, you incrementally upgrade the pc.

  • You save money in the long run.

If someone can understand that and can build his own system then troubleshooting will also be easier and economical.
