To Catch An Escaped Pet Snake

If you have a pet snake chances are it will escape. I've had a few of them escape. I finally figured out how to secure the lids in a way to keep this from happening. As long as I remember to latch them. Haven't had any escapees in a couple of years. Some of the clips a I was using were loose and could easily slide off. I figured out how to bend them to tighten them. I also had some lids that were hinged in the middle and with those I had to use extra clips for each side of the hinge. Once I noticed I was missing a snake I started looking for it. After not being able to find it I built a trap. It is easy using empty paper towel rolls, empty carpet rolls, duct tape and pantyhose.

Best Places To Look For A Lost Snake

Snakes Love To Hide

If you come to your pet's cage and find that he has wandered off the first thing to do is put yourself in his "shoes". Get down on the floor and try to imagine what your snake would see. They like to follow along objects. It makes them feel more secure. So go along any furniture or wall tat is near by and look for small holes. Snakes like to go into dark places to hide. So under furniture, clothes on the floor, in shoes or boots are good places to look. They will also seek out warm places so inside an entertainment center, behind a t.v., or near a register or heater in the winter. I use a space heater in my reptile room in the winter because there isn't a register in it. One time I found a snake curled up on top of it. Another trick is to put some talc or baking soda across door thresholds and along walls. If the snake passes over it you'll be ale to see his tracks. You can also try putting plastic bags down along the walls so if the snake crawls over them it will make noise. After doing all of this and still no snake it may be time to build a trap.

How to Build A Snake Trap

For A Lost Snake

The supplies you'll need are a pair of pantyhose, an empty paper towel roll, an empty carpet roll, and some duct tape. You can go to a carpet store and ask if they have any empty rolls that you can have. They are long so one will make several traps. This trap is for smaller snakes. Any snake bigger than a paper towel roll will need something bigger but the concept is the same. But really if your snake is that big it shouldn't be too hard to find. Unless it gets in the walls.

Start out by cutting the carpet tube to the desired length. About a foot should do it. Trim the paper towel to fit inside the carpet roll. about 6" should be good. You want to to be a couple of inches inside the bigger tube on both sides.

Snake Trap Step One

Cut the tubes to the sizes you want.

Cut The Tubes

I used a bow saw for the carpet tube because it was too thick for scissors. Between 12 to 18 inches should be good. The paper towel tube should be cut a few inches smaller than the big tube. You'll use the excess paper towel tube to cut flaps to cover the holes you are about to cut into the paper towel tube. Take your scissors and cut two "V" shaped holes in the middle of the paper towel tubes.

Step Two

Break out the duct tape and pantyhose

Making The Guts Of The Trap

The inside tube of the trap

You can see in the photo the "V" cuts. I cut them until the were about a half an inch from each other. Then I folded them down and duct taped them so that they block the middle of the tube. If a snake enters the tube it has to crawl out of one of these holes and not out of the other side of the tube. I took the left over tube and cut out the flaps to cover the holes. They are duct taped so that they are hinged. If a snake crawls out through the hole the flap will cover it back up. Next I cut the toes out the the pantyhose and taped an end to each side of the tube. You can also see this in the pic.

Step Three

Put the little tube inside the big tube.

Put It All Together

Finished snake trap

I photo shopped this image so you can see what the little tube looks like in the middle.

Put the little tube inside the big tube and tape one side of the pantyhose to the outside. Then stretch the pantyhose on the other side so that it is tight and the tube is floating in the middle. Tape that side. This will create a funnel on both sides of the big tube leading to the little tube. Snakes natural behavior is to crawl inside a hole when they see it. These funnels will direct the snake into the trap. I put an X on the top so that I know the holes in the little tube are facing up. This will help keep the flaps down. All you have left to do is find a good place to put the tap. Along a wall near furniture is a good place. Snakes like to move along walls and other objects.
