Should You Build Your Own Shed, or Buy A Kit?

When you decide to build your shed, you're faced with the question of building it yourself with a detailed plan, or buying a shed kit from a local home improvement center. The advantages of building it yourself from professional plans and designs are many:

  • Professional shed plans come with detailed instructions, helpful diagrams, dimensions, and materials list.

  • Building a shed yourself insures you'll use high quality materials and professional woodworking techniques.

  • Building your shed yourself allows you to customize, re-size, and modify the design till it meets your expectations.

  • You'll be able to build an attractive shed to fit into your landscaping and home design.

  • Let's face it, building an attractive shed should be an enjoyable experience that increases the value of your property. Working from professional plans and designs assures this outcome.

Questions To Ask About Your Next Shed Project

What is the purpose of your shed?

Will it be used for storing your lawn equipment, your motorcycles, your Christmas decorations, gardening equipment? Or will it be used for more valuable items, that might affect the construction methods and materials?

  • What size do you want your shed? Now that you know what your shed will be used for, decide on the size of your shed. Believe me, bigger is better. If you're set on a 12x16, consider a 12x20. Think of future storage needs.

  • Does your shed need to be waterproof? Depending on where you live, you need to consider whether your shed should be waterproof, maybe insulated for cold weather, or maybe securely anchored against high winds.

  • How about building permits. Will you need one? Nothing can put a damper on a fun building project more than a pesky code enforcement officer putting up a 'Stop Work" order on your storage shed construction. Believe, I've had it happen twice. Seems the neighbors didn't like my design. I got my permit. :-)

  • Finally, what's your budget for your storage shed? Money. How much do you plan on spending for this new project? Using professional plans and material lists, you can build your own storage shed for much less than what a typical kit costs.

    Motorised Garden Shed

In 1997 farmer George Shields from Derbyshire in England built a garden shed on wheels. He regularly took it for drives out of the back garden and down the road to the amazement of the locals. Shields originally built it to take a friend to church to get married. www.itnsource.com ITN T04079711
