Why do you need to get high quality backlinks?

The first step in achieving website success is building quality backlinks, also known as inbound links which are the backbone of search engine optimisation. The more backlinks your website has, the higher the rank you'll get on search engine results page for your targeted keywords.

But having more backlinks to your website doesn't mean you'll rank higher than your competitors. Search engines also consider if the links pointing to your website are relevant or related to your contents. So when building links, you just can't put links where available to. They key to get your comments approved is to add something valuable to the discussion. Target blogs that are the same with your niche and with those that have many commentators. So don't just say "excellent post", "thanks for this post" or "keep it up". Those comments are considered spam.
  • Guest Posting - you can contact other blog owners and ask if they accept guest posting in exchange for a link to your website after your articles. Just make sure to have a valuable content to get your articles accepted.
  • Link Request - this may hard to obtain but, there's no harm in trying. If you stumble on a website that you think can give you a quality back link, contact the website owner and ask nicely if you could get a link from them.

Building high quality backlinks is essential to influence search engines in ranking your page, but how to know if the links you are building are valuable to search engines or not?

The place where your link will come from or the link itself should have the following requirements:

  • relevant content

  • the page or website linking to yours must have a Page Rank of 4 or higher

  • do follow attribute

  • the website is related to your niche

  • links from .edu or .gov sites

  • the links are placed naturally

  • the page title and content of where the links are coming from are related to the targeted page in your website


In addition, when building quality backlinks, you must also vary your keywords used in your hypertext. Do not focus only on your main keyword as search engines may consider it a manipulative move. If you vary your keywords, it would be clear to search engines, especially Google, what your site is all about and it can include your website in SERPs for related keywords.

Now that you know to identify quality backlinks, it's also important to know where to place them. You can do a research and see where your top competitors get their link from and if you happen to stumble on blogs or websites that are related to your niche, check if you could link to them.

    Quality backlinks are quite difficult to get, especially for me :) I like black hat SEO. Just clicking one button you can get thousands of backlinks and of course many of them will not even indexed by google. But, it is ok for a lazy guy :P

    The world of SEO is ever changing and one has to constantly adapt. The key is to remain consistent in improving the quality of the web page or blog and providing uniqueness. Quality backlinks are definitely important. I use several of the strategies you've highlighted here in terms of backlinking.

    The best quality of backlinks are those from the dot gov and dot edu sites. Fortunately Google helps us to find those sites easy. With the FireFox browser and the right plugins it's easy to see which of those sites have a high PR. Comment on those sites more than on others. And do not forget some blogs still use the Do-Follow atribute. The CommentLuv plugin is getting a second wind too. Search for blogs using these and you are well on your way to get some good backlinks.
