How to Buy A Lighthouse Home

Buy a lighthouse home...and live nautically!

The United States General Services Administration (GSA) offers historic lighthouses at no cost to state or local entities, nonprofit corporations, historic preservation groups or community development organizations. Organizations that are interested in acquiring one of these lighthouses must submit a letter expressing interest in the property and complete a rigorous application process.

But this is the part, as a prospective home buyer, you need to know: If no organization comes forward in the time frame offered, the lighthouses will be auctioned to the general public. That's you! This is all done under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Lighthouses that are available will be listed at the link given below, and more information about qualifications at the second link given below.

One thing you need to be aware of, buying and renovating a lighthouse to live in is time and money consuming. There are requirements from the government for the proper maintenance and repair that must be followed. The time and money you spend on this project, of necessity, is a labor of love. Nobody buys a lighthouse thinking it will be a cheap way to live...only that their heart speaks to owning and living in it. So, if your idea is to buy a lighthouse and live nautically, it's entirely feasible to do so.

Wouldn't it be amazing to live in a lighthouse?

Just think....sun, sea, salty air, birds, and the most unique house ever! You'd be the envy of all your friends, which would create a problem; limiting the number of guests who continually want to come visit (and vacation) at your place. That being said, think what fun it would be, learning about lighthouse history first-hand, and decorating your new home with appropriately nautical accessories. What a treat it would be; combing the mainland shops for special pieces to add to your decor, having fresh seafood for dinner any time you feel like it, and just loving your life. I think a lighthouse would be a romantic, magical place to live. At least, once you got the guests to go home!
