Guppies Are Easy To Care For Starter Aquarium Fish

If you're looking for an ideal fish to buy for a new aquarium hobby you are at the right website. Guppies are livebearing tropical fish that are easy to care for, inexpensive, and very pretty. There are several types of livebearing fish that are recommended for beginners, including Mollies, Swordtails, and Plattys. But Guppies are by far the most popular. I started my Guppy tank last year for my grandson to care for and it's turned out to be very enjoyable for me too. I was in our local Petsmart the other day and the store is running a summer special on male Guppy fish for $1 each. The males are the ones with the pretty tails so most tropical fish enthusiasts like to include as many male fish as possible. I even bought a couple to add to my grandsons tank.

Guppy Basics

The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums1 Guppies are called livebearers because they give birth to their babies alive instead of laying eggs. Guppy babies are called fry. The fry will immediately swim around the tank and usually hide in plants so they aren't eaten by the adult fish. That's why it's a good idea to keep lots of plants in a Guppy aquarium.
2 A good population rule of thumb - have about 1 gallon of water for each guppy in the tank to avoid overcrowding.
3 A pregnant female guppy will carry her babies for about 21 days before giving birth.
4 Guppies are peaceful fish and should not be mixed with semi aggressive or aggressive fresh water tropical fish.
5 Fry reach maturity at about 4 months.
6 Guppies live from 2 - 4 years.
7 Guppies can grow to 2 1/2" long.

Tank Conditions And Feeding

1 The aquarium should be located in an area away from direct sunlight and drafts.
2 Your aquarium light should stay on from 8-10 hours every day. Turn it off at night.
3 Use a thermometer to maintain tank water of 74 - 82 degrees. Use a heater if necessary. Tropical fish cannot live in cold water.
4 A properly sized filter should move the water through the tank about 3 times per hour.
