Changing Your Vacuum Cleaner Belt

I Remember I was trying to change the vacuum cleaner belt on my Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, and could not find the instructions. I did find them in the end, so I thought I would pass them on to you in case you have lost yours.

We all have to use a vacuum cleaner, and unfortunately, the vacuum cleaner belt will eventually break. If you have a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner here is how you change the belt.

Here Are the Things You Will Need:

* Phillips screw driver
* Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner belt

Make sure you get the proper belt for your Dirt Devil model. You can find your model number, manufacturing code, and plant code on the vacuum cleaner's data plate. All Dirt Devil model numbers should start with the letter "M".

Unplug the Vacuum Cleaner

You do not want an electric shock, so make sure the vacuum cleaner is unplugged. Turn the vacuum cleaner over and lay it flat on the floor. To remove the nozzle guard, use a Phillips screw driver and remove the three screws. There should be arrows that show the location of the screws.

Remove the Nozzle Guard

Old Fashioned Vacuum CleanerAfter you have removed the three screws, pull and lift the nozzle guard off. Try wiping the nozzle guard off to remove dirt and debris.

Here is a vacuum cleaner that seems to have everything. I do not know what kind it is though. It looks heavy.

Remove the Brush roll

Lift and remove the brush roll. Throw the old belt away. Make sure you clean off the brush roll. I found that using a screwdriver helped me pull off the belt. You can also cut the old belt with some scissors.

Here is a picture of an old vacuum cleaner bag. I prefer to use bagless vacuum cleaners. If you do use bagless vacuum cleaners, try to remember to clean the filter when you empty the canistor.

If you do use bags, remember to get the proper bag for your model vacuum cleaner. You can use universal bags as well, they are cheaper.

Install the New Belt onto Your Vacuum Cleaner

Slide the belt onto the motor shaft. Place the belt on the area of the brush roll without bristles. Using a screwdriver might help you get the new belt on also.

Install the Brush Roll

With the new belt in place, pull and slide the brush roll into the nozzle making sure that the brush roll end caps are in the correct position. Rotate the brush roll manually to make sure the belt is properly aligned.

Install the Nozzle Guard

Reattach the nozzle guard and secure by aligning the three tabs in the base slots.

Here is a picture of an old hand held vacuum cleaner. I like using these for the car and small messes.

Secure the Nozzle Guard

Using the Phillips screw driver, replace all three of the screws to secure the nozzle guard. Then you are finished!

Clean the Filter

Bagless vacuum cleaners have a filter. I usually shake the filter to remove debris. I then wash it and let it dry. Most are washable, but check your product instructions to be sure.

Some Tips and Warnings

* Make sure that the brush and nozzle area are free of debris.

* Make sure the vacuum cleaner is unplugged before taking it apart.

Great stuff, I like the old posters of vacuum cleaners. I love vacuums, and used to sell vacuums at a big box retailer.
