How to Change the World

Ranked #17,885 in Education, #358,243 overall

So you'd like to change the world.

Before you change it it's probably a good idea to understand what's wrong with it.

- Why are there billions of overweight people and at the same time billions of people starving?
- Why do we have enough money to pay for a Britney Spears concert and not enough to make our air clean?
- Why do we go to work day after day building TV's and trading numbers on the Stock Exchange while our school systems fall apart?
- Why do we continue to run oil based economy when it's running out, polluting our air, and warming our planet?

And is there anything we can do about it?!

The Modern Corporation

First You have to Understand What's Wrong With It

Corporate ProfitsA traditional corporation follows a predictable path - It starts up, gets investors who risk money in the hope of getting back more money than they risked. Eventually if it's lucky it goes public and gets a whole bunch of new investors who give it more money with the hope of getting back more money than THEY invested. In the meantime the corporation provides a service to the public, and hopefully they do it better and cheaper than everyone else.

Sounds great right? The problem with this paradigm is that things like the environment, world hunger, and many other issues are never addressed by society.

Sure governments can address these problems, but they have to beg for money from their citizens in the form of taxes, not to mention the fact that large multi-national corporations have in many ways taken over and corrupted most governments. Every time a country tries to spend money on something important like fixing the environment you hear cries of "It will cost jobs!", "We'll have to raise taxes!" and "Who's going to pay for it!' In the meantime millions of people spend their day building a better television while people around the world starve and the planet's natural environments are devastated.

The Public Benefit Corporation

A new way of doing things

Two kidsHow about a corporation where there shareholders would be the citizens of the world and indeed the world itself. Where the board of directors are the people of the world who vote on how to spend the money. Whose mission is to use our profits in a way which will benefit all of humankind by spending the money first were it's needed most.

This new type of corporation is called a "Public Benefit Corporation" (PBC) which is just a fancy name for a for-profit non-profit, or a corporation who makes money in order to give it away.

Ok, maybe the name won't catch on but hopefully the concept will... Will this be the idea that changes the world?
