How to choose an engagement ring
Getting engaged is just the prologue to spending your life together in marital bliss, but the first step is always the hardest. It may have come up in conversation, it may be discussed over dinner, but the ring will be on your bride's hand before and probably a long time after the wedding. So how do you choose the ring?
Picking the perfect engagement ring
BudgetTake the "three-month rule" and bury it in the backyard, because in order for the diamond companies for you to show up and buy their more expensive items, they have tomake something up. Set a price for a ring that you can afford, that won't make you go into financial debt and wonder how you're going to eat that month.
Should we choose together?
Many couples today choose engagement rings and wedding bands together. In today's Western societies it is not uncommon for couples to be living together long before marriage and frequently the prospect of marriage is discussed openly. If you and your partner have discussed the path of marriage the element of surprise may not be worth the risk of purchasing the wrong ring. If your partner is particularly fussy you may wish avoid potential disappointment with the wrong choice or arrange for her to choose from a selection of rings at a jeweller. Others will prefer to have their partner surprised and choose a ring on their behalf simply because it is something special you have chosen for her.
Style
Follow your intuition on the style of your ring, while asking yourself if it will be something you'll be comfortable wearing for the next 50 years. The traditional simple gold band will still appear contemporary many years from now. If that is too simple for you, consider an engraved style or beaded edge.
The Stone
Engagement rings are traditionally diamond, but there are a lot other interesting choices out there. Cubic zirconia is popular, as it can give that "bling" factor for very little cost, but it can lose its colour over time. With this stone, however, you can have more stones laid in for very little cost, if it suits the band. Jade has become slightly more popular over the years, and white sapphire has been hanging around for probably hundreds. Moissanite is also gaining popularity, with it being the stopgap between diamond and cubic zirconia. Diamond is the one, of course, that "lasts forever, " but make sure the stone is polished every now and again in order for it to show itself off.
Buying the right size
You are in luck if your girlfriend already wears some sort of ring. When she is showering or has taken the ring off simply find a piece of paper and trace the internal circumference of the ring. There are a number of sizing guides which will be able to help you choose the correct size with the information you have now obtained. Alternatively you may wish to buy a loose diamond. A loose diamond is diamond purchased by itself without any setting. This way your partner can choose the style and size of her preference later on and you will still have something very special to your partner.
The final option is to design your own engagement rings- what a fantastic way to say "I LOVE" you!
