How to choose a skateboard?
Ranked #6,232 in Sports & Recreation, #154,407 overall
How to buy a skateboard?
This is not unusual because there are many tricky parts when picking your skateboard?
There are so many things too think of. Like, what size wheels do I get? What type of Deck? How hard should my wheels be?
Hopefully, I can break it here to help you when you decide you're ready to get your skateboard.

Show me the Money!
However, If you really love skateboarding, you may want a much better board, which of course can cost you some bucks. Most skaters actually make their own.
Which way do I go George?
Longboards can cost from $120-$500
Classics can cost from $80-$400
Street/verts can cost from $50-$150
But no so fast, lets go through a few things first.
Hey, I'm on a fixed income

Alright, so you decided to buy a complete skateboard. My suggestion would be that you buy one online.
The completes are never going to be as good as a custom made board, but you can get them for a lot less money.
Here are the differences.
A complete can cost anywhere from $50-$200 while a custom made one can cost anywhere from $90-$500.
Completes Price go by the brand. Here is an example.
Mini-Logo Red $99.00 Mini-Logo
Classic $149.00 Surf One
Twisted Dragon $59.00 Powell Golden Dragon
Sunrise Wave $149.00 Surf One
Kickflip Red $59.00 A ngelboy
Andy Mac Fist $59.95 Andy Mac
Ready for the big time
A few things to ask yourself, is how much money do you want to spend on a skateboard deck?
Do you want a Blank deck?
The blank decks are the boards with no image on them. These decks are much less money then the pro decks and they ride just as well.
But if you're determined to buy your favorite pro skateboarder's deck and you have enough money, go right ahead. Get personal.
But I love Spongebob
If you really want a complete board, but still not sure exactly what you want, buy it from a skateboard company or go to a skate shop and ask the sales person about the difference options. Chances are they know.
Here are a few tips.
If you want to ride on the streets, get a 7.5 to 8.0 deck, if you want to ride vert, 8.0 and up is probably best.
Another tip while choosing a board width is how tall you are and also what kind of style you wish to skate.
But there really is no hard or fast rule when it comes to which one you 'should have'. It's more of what makes you comfortable.
Skateboards
I love Trucks

No you silly, not the kind you drive, but they are kinda cool also. Look right above you and you can see what I am talking about. If you cant see it, then maybe you should re-think skating.
The Trucks are really an important piece of a skateboard. (without them, well, the board won't go. When purchasing a truck, you want to look for these characteristics.
A length that is no more 10 inches.
A width that fits the deck, so 7.5 trucks on a 7.5 deck.
A design that you like.
Lightweight.
Grinds well.
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Wheels

Time to Purchase the wheels. Yes, this is also important, because if you dont have these, well, the most fun you will have skateboarding, is watching/
1 Pick out wheels that are for the kind of skateboard that you have - you don't want a street deck with long board wheels. Just because you might think a wheel looks cool, doesnt mean its the best wheel for your skateboad. (think spongebob)
2 Use big and soft wheels if you have a longboard.
3 Use small and hard wheels for street.
4 Use the same brand of wheels as your decks brand. However, If you have a deck (such as Almosts, DGKs, etc.) you can pick a wheel from any brand.
Just bear with me

Well, you will need to purchase the bearings. The price really depends on the bearing. When buying bearings, make sure the bearings are the correct ones you need.
The bearings are rated in ABEC, from 1-9 (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) with the higher grades being more accurate and precise, meaning they will last longer, spin more accurately and faster, and obviously make you move a lot smoother, quieter, and faster.
The best grade for your first board will probably be 5 or 7.
When looking at wheels, keep in mind, that if you start with ABEC 1 wheels, yea, I know they are much cheaper, then you plan on casually upgraded them in the future, you will find it real hard to get used to them as you will move a lot faster than before.
Bearings Prices per brands
Bones Red Bearings $16.99 Bones Bearings
Bones Ceramic Bearings $94.99 Bones Bearings
Bones Swiss Labyrinth $37.99 Bones Bearings
Bones Original Swiss Bearings $34.99 Bones Bearings
Bones Super Swiss Bearings $39.99 Bones Bearings
Mini-Logo Bearings $8.99 Mini-Logo
Helmets, really?
Do i even have to mention this. Weather your starting out or have been skating for years, dude, wear your damn helmet. Geeshhhh! You do NOT look cool without wearing one, in fact, you look like a complete idiot.
Have you ever met someone who didn't wear a helmet and had a bad fall. Chances are you havn't, because they are in a rehab learning how to talk and walk again. So don't even get me started on wearing a helmet. You will thank your parents when you have bad fall (which I can almost guarentee you will) and you were wearing your helmet.
Don't go cheap on this one folks. Even if you get a complete skateboard to save some bucks, do NOT go cheap on your hemet.

- Geesh, skateboarding has come a long way since the 70's. In 74' I loved my Rat Fink designed board and I knew nothing about skateboarding other than I loved to go fast down hills. And no, we didn't wear helmets then. I'd kill my kid if they did that now. lol

- Great lens! If you'd like, I definitely suggest some YouTube videos about skateboarding and you may want to run your intro paragraph through a spell-check, like the one in Gmail or Word. There are a few small mistakes.
Good job and thanks for using Squidoo!
