Choosing the Best Makeup Brush

I just got an email from my sister asking me to help her choose the right makeup brushes. She explained that she is in terrible need of a new set of brushes and doesn't know where to start. I love makeup and I've had plenty of experience buying brushes so she was correct to ask her big sis. :-)

But that got me thinking - if my sis needs help with this and has asked me for advice, quite possible other people are struggling with this very topic. So I thought I'd put together a guide gleaned from my years of wearing makeup (and buying some good brushes and some bad brushes!)... My goal is to guide you in the process of finding the right brushes for your needs.

“My Favorite Brush!”

Lancome Foundation Brush

My Favorite Foundation Brush!

I bought this brush a few years ago and it's still going strong! I used to use those awful foam sponges but those make the makeup look caked on. These brushes have the same affect as air brushing! It's awesome. And you don't use as much foundation which is nice because foundation can be pricey depending on which brand you buy.

This is the only brush that I feel as a must have because it is the only thing you can't improvise with what you already have (like cotton swabs!)...

If you wear liquid foundation (no matter the brand) this is hands down the best foundation brush. I tried another brand once (I forget which) and the brush was annoying - it left hairs on my face. This brush has not done that. It doesn't put the foundation on in streaks either like other foundation brushes I've tried. It's awesome and a must have!

Can't you just use any old makeup brush?

Any old makeup brush won't do!

True Cosmetics Liner Diffuser Brush

If you think that any old brush will work, perhaps you've never been burned by a bad, cheap brush. They're terrible! And by cheap, I mean cheaply made not inexpensive. There are some great $7 brush sets out there (Sephora has some good ones!) and some terrible $30 brushes. It all depends on the quality. I tried to make your job easier by pointing you to products I've tried and they were great.

Disasterous brushes clump the makeup on your skin in chunks and leave those awful synthetic hairs on your skin. I even had one get in my eye - not fun.

Great Makeup Brush Sets

Makeup Brush Sets for Every Price Range

All these sets are great! You can't go wrong with any of them. If you don't know which types of brushes you like yet, try buying a set. Then the next time you need new brushes, you can pick and choose the types you like best. This is how I started. Now I know what I like. It makes life so much easier!
