Always check for care instructions inside your bag. If non are available, test any new cleaning methods on small, inconspicuous areas before applying to the rest of the bag to ensure no discolorations occured.

How to Clean Fabric Purses

A top-of-the-line designer handbag like a Coach is a magnificent fashion statement. What you're buying in a Coach goes far beyond its name or social status. You're buying the very best quality materials and workmanship, along with a creative style that'll make you stand out from the crowd.

Coach has consistently come out with some of the trendiest, as well as the most elegant handbags on the market. As a result, they have an extensive collection of products that span a wide range of materials.

Here, we'll cover Coach's fabric and suede purses, including their famous signature line. We'll also go over interior lining treatment techniques.

For leather care, please read Part 1 of this series.

  • Get Coach's Signature Fabric Cleaner for their Signature jacquard collections. For best results, apply a small amount of the cleaner to a clean, soft, white cloth and rub gently in a circular motion. Wipe away excess with a clean, white damp cloth. Minimize wetting to reduce the likelihood of leaving rings. Blot dry with a dry, white cloth and allow to air dry naturally. Do NOT use the cleaner on ink, grease or oil stains.

  • For grease stains, I've had success with applying a small amount of diluted dishwashing detergent onto a clean, white cloth. Use no more than 1 tbsp. with 2 cups of warm water. Use a dabbing motion to prevent wear on the texture. Blot dry with a clean, white cloth to remove any soapy residue. Air dry naturally indoors.

  • The Coach Signature Collection Fabric Cleaner can be used for the following collections, which are crafted in jacquard fabric that has been specially treated to be water and stain resistant: Classic Signature, Mini Signature, Optic Signature, Graphic Signature and Signature Stripe (do not use on the actual leather stripe).

  • Do not use the Sig C Fabric Cleaner on the following lines. For these, most stains can be cleaned with a mild soap and a damp cloth. Blot dry with a clean, white cloth to remove any soapy residue. Allow to air dry: All Hamptons Weekend Collections, Chelsea pony hair and metallic, Quilted C, Metro, Signature Patchwork, Vintage Signature Tie Dye, Legacy Cotton and Beach Stripe.

  • For the Madison and Lurex Optic C Collections, follow the care instructions found with each bag. To clean printed ocelot hair calf styles and fur styles, use a slightly moistened cloth. Allow to dry naturally, away from any source of heat. You may also use a fine bristle brush to clean the fur. When brushing, make sure to stroke in the direction of the fur. I do not recommend using any Coach Cleaners or Moisturizers on lurex Optic C, satin, and mink styles.

  • The Soho Twill Collection is made from cotton sateen twill that is specially treated to be both water and stain resistant. If cleaning the fabric is necessary, most stains can be easily cleaned with a mild soap and water applied with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid the use of harsh solvents or cleaning products, and it should not be treated with Coach Fabric Care products.

  • The Coach Straw Collection is made of hand woven straw and trimmed with Bridle and Patent leather. It's easy to maintain and should simply be cleaned with only a damp cloth. Blot dry to prevent the moisture from setting in. The natural straw isn't treated to be stain or water repellant. Due to the natural materials, straw will weather with age and some strands may eventually unravel and snag certain fine fabric. It should not be treated with Coach Fabric or Leather Care products.

  • For suede and nubuc styles, follow the directions in the suede care kit that is included with each Coach bag. If it isn't available, follow these steps:

  • Brush the area gently with a soft suede brush to remove the stains. For stubborn marks, use a suede eraser first, then brush gently with a suede brush.

  • For suede only: If this doesn't work, place a small amount of vinegar on a cotton swab. Rub the tip into the stain and allow it to sit for five minutes. Use a lightly moistened cloth and dab vinegar residue away. Allow the purse to air dry naturally and away from heat.

  • If you're uncomfortable using vinegar, try using an emery board (just like the ones you use for your nails). Do not use one with strong colors to avoid transferring the color to your suede Coach handbag. Lightly rub the stain back and forth. Works great on red wine stains.

  • For interior lining, start by vacuuming to remove the dirt and dust from the liner.

  • Fill a small bowl with a small squirt of liquid dish soap or chlorine-free, bleach-free laundry detergent and lukewarm water. With a soft, clean, white cloth, dab at the marks or stains, Don't rub. You don't want the soap to saturate the lining and work its way into the jacquard fabric. Blot dry with a clean, white cloth. Air dry.

  • Important tip: Interior satin lining is susceptible to ink jet transfer. When carrying ink jet papers, make sure you have them stashed in a folder so they're unable to rub up against the satin. Too late? Use rubbing alcohol to reduce the stain, but it won't remove the stain completely.

    Home Remedies for Cleaning Handbags

Coach Signature CollectionHere are some remedies passed on from previous generations of enlightened and stylish women!

    • The dreaded pen mark! Tested successfully on white leather Soho bags so far: Buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol, dip a cotton swab in it. Gently blot the cotton swab with a paper towel. Rub the swab gently over the pen mark and it should come out.

    • For pen marks on Coach Signature fabric, spray a bit of hairspray on a Q-tip and rub the stain gently. Use another clean Q-tip with water to remove the hairspray. Tested successfully on a Lexi pink Begonia satchel.

    • Nervous? Test it on a small patch of leather in an unnoticeable spot first to see that it doesn't damage the leather.
