Tips for Cleaning Tile Floors

I'm having a battle with my cream-colored tile floors. This is the first time I've had to deal with this style floor and on top of that, I have a black cat. When I sweep, it makes it worse because the hair gets stuck in the grout. Plus, the color itself shows every little dirt speck. I've only had hardwood floor - and those are a lot more forgiving.

This lens includes everything I've learned about keeping tile flooring looking spotless.

A steam cleaner is the number one tool for cleaning tiled floors. Traditional mopping requires that you sweep or vacuum then mop. It takes forever! A good steam cleaner does it all at once! I like this one because it is a floor model (I don't like the upright kinds) and it is also powerful and quite affordable.

  • Throw rugs. Put through rugs down in key spots - such as by each of your doors - so people can wipe their feet.
  • Spot clean. Every time I mop, I notice new spots and new hair balls within minutes. Try to keep up with cleaning them as they happen - that way you'll only need to steam clean once a week.
  • Sweep Constantly. You can also "spot sweep" each day or every other day. This will help you get between cleanings.
  • Prevent pet hair build up by regularly grooming your cat or dog. Some owners take their pet outside and brush the hair out. This really does help.
