Our Fragile Planet...
We all live on our planet Earth, and the majority of us just seem to consume and destroy instead of giving back to our planet and making sure it stays in great condition for future generations!
It is something that bothers me and that is why I hope to create awareness about this issue!
This lens is filled with ideas and tips how YOU can conserve energy, and if everyone brings their part and does their little bit, we will all be much better off:)
Using rechargeable batteries
So many remotes and electronic devices operate on batteries, and when those batteries are flat, people just throw them away, in the regular trash so that they get dumped somewhere in the environment.
Do you know how toxic batteries are???
And its so simple to solve the problem or reduce it by 1000%!

All everyone needs to do is buy rechargeable batteries! They are a lot more common nowadays, and you can buy them in your local grocery store. They come in all the normal duracell sizes, and when they are flat, you just stick them in the charger for a few hours and theyre good to go again!
Initially a set might cost you 15$ instead of 5$, but rechargeable batteries pay for themselves many many times over!
RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES LAST UP TO 1000 TIMES BEFORE THEY MUST BE THROWN AWAY!
So you are not just saving the environment, you are saving money too!
What are you waiting for...never buy normal batteries again, only rechargeables!

Switch ordinary light bulbs for energy-savers

Just by replacing a 100W lightbulb with an 11W energy saving bulb, the amount of light is practically the same.
100W * 24 * 365 = 876 000W
11W * 24 * 365 = 96 360W
Thats a SAVING of 779 640W per year for ONE BULB.
Sure...you have to pay a little more for energy saving bulbs, But just like with recharegable batteries, energy saving bulbs will pay for themselves many times over.
SO AGAIN, youre saving money AND saving the environment!
DID YOU KNOW...?
You can even make your own solar panels and power-generating windmills so you can run sections of your home off 100% renewable energy?

Switch off stand-by equipment
Make a habit of switching stand-by devices off at the plug point, so they no longer consume any electricity when not in use.
If your plug point does not have a switch it requires a bit of work, but all you have to do is just add a switch onto the cord between the plug point and the device in question so you can manually switch it off at any time.

Solar powered geysers for hot water

Use energy consciously
We are so spoiled nowadays with airconditioning and heating and we just take it for granted that we can switch it on or off when we want to make the temperature as pleasurable as possible.
When things become unbearable...then yes we can take the advantage of modern day and bring the temperature to a more agreeable one, but then only do it in one room where you spend the most time, and don't cool or heat your entire house!
Don't leave doors or windows open when heating or cooling!
Invest in some draught tape, which will close gaps and openings around doors and windows which let in cold or warm air making you have to heat or cool in vain!

When it is cold, instead of heating your home up to sauna temperature and walking around in a tshirt...put on lots of layers of warm clothes first. Maybe invest in some wood and make a fire to keep the house warm.

Against the heat...awnings can make a huge difference in the temperature of your house, preventing the sun from shining in directly and thus heating your house up incredibly.

You can insulate your roof if that hasnt been done, with styrofoam or that pink wool insulation material builders use, and it will reduce the suns heating effect dramtically!

There is shiny film available that you can stick on the inside of your windows, that will reflect the suns rays and minimise the heating effect. Its kind of like one-way mirrors, where on the outside it will reflect the suns rays like a mirror, and from the inside it will look like youre wearing sunglasses.
Eat more natural...choose water over Coca Cola!
What if everyone just cut down on junk food, no more chocolate bars, no more cans of soda, no more small bags of chips.

Install a reverse osmosis system in your home so you can drink the tap water safely.
Not only will you stop wasting and polluting the environment with litter from all your soda cans and bottles, you will actually be healthier because our bodies are designed to run off water, not off sugar and carbon dioxide and preservatives.
I made a lens on the subject of eating healthy, have a look at it
here! (You are what you eat.)
Eat more fruits and vegetables. Get them at your green grocer and you will see mostly they do not come in packaging. SO once again, fruits and vegetables are much much healthier for you AND YOU SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT!
Choose an eco-friendly car!!
This is the next big problem when it comes to wasting energy. All those gas-guzzling SUV's!And for people who drive in a city...WHY...CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY...do they need an offroad 4x4 almost as big as a truck?
I was reading an article today in a popular science magazine, and last year, Americans alone, burned up 500 BILLION LITRES OF PETROL! Thats 60 MILLION LITRES AN HOUR,EVERY SINGLE HOUR!!!
The fuel consumption of SUV's and super fast sports-cars is over 13 litres per 100km!
Yes...its all about prestige and status, but we have to stop thinking about ourselves for a bit and see the bigger picture and the effect of 'status'.
Im not saying you should not have a luxury car, or a sports car or an SUV, but have it as a second car that you drive maybe once a week and for all your other driving buy something economical like a toyota prius, or a golf/jetta tdi or even mercedes benz has come out with a bluetech diesel version.
Quick stats on these economical vehicles:

Toyota Prius For Sale
Fuel consumption - 4.6l/100km
0-100 - 11.9seconds

Mercedes Bluetech E320 diesel
Fuel consumption - 6.5l/100km
0-100 - 6.8seconds

Golf 2.0 TDI
Fuel consumption - 5.6l/100km
0-100 - 9.8seconds
DID YOU KNOW...?
You can even convert your current car to run on a mixture of gas and WATER, to reduce fuel consumption and emissions?

- Great idea with the rechargeable batteries! So many people throw them away in the trash can and they leak dangerous chemicals into our drinking water.

- Clean energy relies heavily on finding good, cheap storage. Wouldn't it be nice if batteries could be shrunk as much as electronics has?
