I always knew that conserving water was the right thing to do. So, I would make sure that I didn't let the sink run or that our faucets didn't drip. But it wasn't until I moved to CA that conserving water became more than the "right thing". Here, water is scarce and expensive.

Why conserve water?

Yes, the Earth has a natural system for recirculating the water that we use.

But the truth is, we're using water faster than it can be replenished in nature. This means that our water stores get depleted rather quickly.

Water conservation is the answer to this problem.

Low Flow Shower Head

Easy Way to Conserve Water

Everyone needs to install low flow shower heads. They make such an impact. It takes some time to get used to, but once the family adjusts you end up saving a ton of water. It really adds up especially if you have a lot of people in your household.

One of the easiest things you can do is install a low flow shower head. Can you imagine how much water you'll save if you have a shower head like this installed AND you turned the water off on the nonessential parts of your shower, such as shampooing your hair?

Before I moved to California, I didn't realize how scarce water really is. It barely rains. There is constant forest fire danger in many parts of the state. As a result, water is expensive. Making changed like this helps save money AND conserve water. It's a win-win.

Tips for Conserving Water

Water Conservation Info

After I learned that we need to really pay attention to our water usage, I set out to learn more about it. This is a collection of my favorite tips.
  • Check for leaks.Make sure there are no drips or leaks throughout the home, such as leaky pipes or faucets. A leak can really add up over the course of the month, even a mild one.
  • Take shorter showers. When I was a kid, I was actually obsessed with conserving water. A key strategy that I used back then was to shut off the water while I didn't need the water. So now, I'll shut it off while I create shampoo lather, use shower gel, and shave.
  • Shower heads and toilets. There are some shower heads out there that don't let as much water through. Make sure the showers in your home have them. You can also get toilets that don't put as much water into the bowl.
  • Don't waste! This may seem like common sense, but I'm guilty of it as well. For example, I find myself filling up a glass with water, drinking half of it, and then dumping the rest down the sink. Why not save the water for next time, instead? Think about ways that you waste water and try to change your habits.
  • Put the wash level on medium. My brother in law clued me in on this one. If you are using a large load, set it on medium! Everything still gets as clean as it always does, but with half the water.

Great lens! I was thinking of doing a similar one since I grew up in Southern California and water was so important. I can't believe how much water some people waste. Great California thinking :)
