So You Have Been Diagnosed with Hypothyroidism

Are you feeling a bit lost? Anxious? Frustrated?

I did when I was first diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism. I really had no clue what hypothyroidism was much less how to deal with it. The doctor wanted to put me on medication for it (a common treatment) but I needed to learn more about this disease before putting medicine in my body that I didn't even know what it was treating.

Thankfully, there is alot of information available and the REALLY good news is that I didn't have to take medication to control my underactive thyroid. There ARE natural ways to treat this, a much healthier alternative to prescription medication that has some pretty nasty side effects.

What is Hypothyroidism Anyway?

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland (located in the neck) does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Without the production of enough hormones, your metabolism slows down considerably which in turn, causes many symptoms. One of the most problematic and frustrating of these symptoms is fast and unexplained weight gain.

Hypothyroidism is 10 times more likely to affect women then men. It is also more common in women between the ages of 40-50. Hypothyroidism can be caused by many things - an iodine deficiency, too much iodine, some medications, autoimmune diseases, pituitary disorders to name a few. Pregnancy can also trigger issues with the thyroid gland.

An underactive thyroid should always be diagnosed by your doctor and medications discussed if that is the recommendation of your medical professional.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Are you lacking energy for your usual run these days? Low energy can be a symptom of hypothyroidism along with other symptoms like the ones below.
Have you experienced some or many of these symptoms recently? When I saw this list for the first time it was like a lightbulb went off in my brain - this was me! I was truly a prisoner of my symptoms - they were controlling my day to day life far too much.

* Chronic Fatigue
* Weight Gain
* Puffy Face
* Droopy Eyelids
* Depression
* Slow Reflexes
* Muscle Aches, Cramps or Weakness
* Decreased Sex Drive
* Excessive Menstrual Bleeding
* Premenstrual Tension
* Absence of Periods
* Loss of Appetite
* Constipation
* Memory Loss
* Difficulty Concentrating
* Dry, Itchy Skin

If you are experiencing many of these symptoms, go to your doctor to get tested for an underactive thyroid. Remember though, these symptoms can be erased with diet! You may never have to take prescription medications for your thyroid problems.

Controlling Hypothyroidism with Diet

Hypothyroidism can be controlled by diet as a natural alternative to medication. But where do you start? There is so much information on the internet these days - how do you sift through it all to find what does and doesn't work?

What about natural herbs or vitamins and minerals? Do they have any effect on the thyroid function? Absolutely!

I found it really hard to gather all the information into one simple place until I found a great guide from a naturopath in Australia. Duncan Capicchiano is a much sought after hypothyroidism specialist and lives in Melbourne, Australia (one day when I get down there I will make sure to look him up and thank him from the bottom of my heart!)

I had never explored alternative medicine before this and I was skeptical. Thyroid medication was causing me some pretty awful side effects though and I needed to find something else that would work without having to take prescription medication.

I needed to get my energy back, lose weight and reverse my condition and Duncan helped me do that. My diet now controls my thyroid and I no longer suffer the symptoms of a thyroid that just doesn't work!
