Why Convert Movies to iPod?
Want to watch movies on your iPod but don't know how? Here I'm going to look at the whole process from ripping a DVD, converting it to the right format and uploading it to your iPod. If you've landed here and thinking "isn't the screen too small to make it worth while to convert movies to iPod?" then think again - what about when you're on a flight and they don't have anything you want to watch - how about watching something you've preloaded onto your iPod instead?

An overview of how to convert movies to iPod format
Before uploading a movie to your iPod you need to go through 2 prior stages in order to copy it from the DVD and make it playable by your iPod. The entire process consists of:
1. Copy the DVD to your computer
2. Convert the movie to a format that your iPod understands, called MP4
3. Upload the movie to your iPod

Software downloads
You'll need some software to allow you to convert DVD movies to your iPod. I've listed Magic DVD Ripper which I use, but there are other products available too. You may also find 2 pieces of software that each do half the job.
- Magic DVD Ripper
- I've always used Magic DVD Ripper and so don't have anything to compare it with. However, it is nice and easy to use and pretty cheap, so I definitely recommend using it as it converts from DVD to MP4 directly.
Step 1: Rip your DVD
The tool I use for ripping and converting DVDs is called Magic DVD Ripper and is nice and easy to use. There are probably freeware products available for you to use, but since I've always used this I'll recommend that you buy it here :-) You can find a link in the software download section above.
Once you've installed Magic DVD Ripper simply start it and put your DVD in the tray of your PC.
Now you'll have to make some selections:
1. Change the Destination folder to somewhere convenient for you to use.
2. You may like to select a different Audio option from the one chosen by default.
3. In Output select iPod and change the File Name to the name of the movie
4. Click Start and wait for the movie to be ripped and converted.
Once you've installed Magic DVD Ripper simply start it and put your DVD in the tray of your PC.

Step 2: convert movie to iPod format (optional)
If you have used Magic DVD Ripper then this stage has already been done for you. If not you need to find the file on your hard drive and convert it to iPod format. Jodix iPod Video Converter was written to do this and the great news is that it is free.
1. Open Jodix iPod Video Converter and click Add Files.
2. Browse your files until you find the video file you want to convert.
3. Click Next and make adjustments to the video and audio as necessary. You may have to play around with this until you find the optimum conditions.
4. Click Next followed by OK.
5. Click CONVERT. That's it!

Step 3: how to put videos on your iPod
Ok, the final bit of the puzzle. You probably know how to do this already, but here it is anyway.
1. Open iTunes.
2. Drag and drop the new video file (MP4) into iTunes.
3. Click update on your iPod.
That's it, you can now watch a movie while on the move.
