I was raised a junk food kid.... someone who grew up with fast food and french fries.  But, as is common with many others, you start to have a few years under your belt, take a look around at a family and a life you love....and you realize - "It's time to take care of myself".

Darn mortality!

When I came across Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa), I was fascinated - what an amazing and complete food!  Thing is, Quinoa is NOT new - the Incas were eating it over 6,000 years ago.  I tend to be a picky eater at times (or maybe I'm just set in my junk food ways and resist all that is healthy...lol), so I was a bit nervous about eating Quinoa the first time.

This stuff tastes great!  It's is filling without making you feel bloated and overly-full...and when I eat Quinoa for breakfast, I feel great and have a nice energy level that lasts for hours.

If you've been thinking about trying Quinoa - don't be intimidated.  Below I have the simple step-by-step directions for cooking Quinoa.  From there, the sky is the limit as Quinoa is highly versatile and can be used in many, many recipes.

How To Cook Quinoa - Step by Step Instructions

Quinoa is so simple to cook. If you know how to cook basic rice, you will have no issues cooking Quinoa.

Main thing to remember is 2:1.

That means, 2 cups of liquid for every one cup of Quinoa.

Important Note - What brand of Quinoa you buy IS important.

Many brands are not pre-washed, or pre-washed thoroughly enough, and that can destroy you chances of liking it because it will have a very bitter taste to it.

Be sure to COMPLETELY rinse your Quinoa - or be sure to buy the most recommended Quinoa on the market (also my favorite)

Step One -

Add the Quinoa and the water to a saucepan and bring to a boil

Step Two -

Place a lid on the saucepan

Step Three -

Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes (try to not remove the lid while your Quinoa is simmering)

Step Four -

Remove from heat but do NOT remove the lid

Step Five -

Step Six -

Remove lid and fluff with a fork (just like you would fluff rice).

Season to taste and enjoy!

Note: You may find you prefer a little less water. Many people cook their Quinoa at a 1.5:1 ration of liquid to Quinoa. Experiment and see what works best for you.
