If you properly charge the batteries to your dog taining system, the batteries should last you years.

For many years, electronic dog training collar systems utilized disposable batteries, requiring that they be constantly replaced. This was often at a great cost to trainers, as batteries are traditionally quite expensive. Furthermore, they always seemed to lose their charge and stop functioning at the most inopportune time. Thankfully, however, training systems were developed that utilize modern rechargeable batteries. This has greatly extended the life and usefulness of the products overall, which has served to make them much more popular with both professional and amateur trainers. In order to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of your system, you should know the facts of how your charging system operates.

With most systems, the transmitter has metal contact points on the bottom that are inserted into a cradle for charging. Always make sure that prior to doing this there is no dirt or debris on the contacts of the transmitter or the cradle. When you first purchase the unit, charging for up to twenty four hours is recommended. However, after that point, many modern batteries can be fully recharged in a little more than two hours. These batteries are far more powerful than their predecessors: they can hold a charge for one hundred hours or more! Unlike other rechargeable batteries, there are no "memory" issues with batteries for electronic dog training collar systems. This means that, previously, the batteries would have to be completely discharged before they could be recharged again. With today's models, this is not the case, and you can recharge the batteries if needed after only fifteen minutes of use or less.

While some systems come with disposable batteries, usually nine-volts in the receiver, more and more manufacturers are beginning to replace those disposable batteries with rechargeable ones. These modern batteries, when properly cared for, can last from between three and five years. In fact, it is recommended to use them as much as possible. Rechargeable batteries tend to discharge their power even when not in use. The longer they are dormant, the more power they will progressively lose. For this reason, if your transmitter or receiver uses rechargeable batteries, and your system is in storage, you should still charge the units periodically. This will keep them from building up a resistance to holding a charge.

Remember to never mix types or even differently aged rechargeable batteries. Use only the batteries and chargers supplied by the manufacturer for your electronic dog training collar system. When you are ready for replacements, most systems are easy to replace, and require little more than a phone call to the manufacturer. Finally, after every charge, be sure to test your equipment to determine that it did indeed charge fully, and is entirely operational. It's quite another story altogether to find out that the charge did not occur correctly while in the field or on the hunt. For this reason, it may be wise to contact the manufacturer and purchase an extra set of rechargeable batteries. You can never be too safe.
